I noticed that the Freshman dorms (esp doubles) don't have much room. Do most students bring their own printers anyway? Do they share a communal one connected on a network? Do they upload to a school network and print from a school printer?

i brought my own printer, a black and white laser and put it under my bed. It was a very wise decision as I was using it all the time. No need for color and a laser just gets it done faster w/o the constant ink changes.

I second the laser printer suggestion.

My laser printer used to blow the circuit breaker from time to time.. but it's probably because I also had a 75watt guitar amp plugged into the same extension cord.

You should most definitely bring your own printer

Definitely bring a printer....you will use it more than you anticipate. You can print on campus, but it's a pain if it's 2 am and you need to print something for a morning class :-)

my printer died early in the year so i don't have one...im lucky to be in dickson and have the computer lab nearby for printing. but its still a pain and ive racked up some pretty substantial printing charges on my bursar bill...def bring a printer

I also recommend one of the All in One (printer, scanner, copier) devices.

wayyyy too bulky and 3x more expensive.

The best laser printer I have ever used is the HP Laserjet 1020. The ink cartridge lasted me one whole year and I printed every single day. Prints in literally less than 5 seconds, bought it for $99 bucks. I LOVE it. Retail is $159-179 btw, don't pay that. Amazon has it for 99 I think.

eh...I got an HP 1410 3 years ago for $80 and it's rather light and definitely not bulky. Fits neatly on the bottom shelf of my bookcase. Just as good as any other printer....

Just gotta know where to shop....

is there ever a need for the 3-in-one ones for copy, scan, print?

I've used all 3 functions many times

I've had a couple of those 5-in-1's. The bad thing about them is that the printer is usually an inkjet printer that you have to keep buying cartridges for. I think the cost comes out to be the same if you use an inkjet vs. NetPrint.

If you have a laser printer, bring it. If you plan to use an inkjet printer, you might as well save some space and print at the computer labs/libraries.

oy...I guess any topic can spawn an argument.

Get what you feel will best suit your needs.....

They charge for printing at Cornell?!? Wow, I'm genuinely surprised.

I've got a printer in my dorm right now, and I'm definitely glad I did.

Cornell charges for everything...or so it seems :-)

but...I guess it's better than having a semester quota like my old college did.

Yeah you're right, I just thought of that internet-use cap. I didn't know Cornell was so stingy!

well, my dad is intent on buying me a 3-in-1 for some reason -__- i dont' even use a scanner at home, but i guess maybe i'll need that and a copier in college..somehow. Do they have scanners or copiers for us to use in libraries or computer labs? thanks! =]

yes....scanners and copiers are available on campus. I believe it's free to scan but you pay for copying.

I enjoy the convenience of having my own 3 in 1....but there seems to a faction on CC that does not feel they are necessary.
