Printer Recommendation

My D wants to get a printer to take to Bama with her. We have a HP Photosmart printer and it goes through ink like crazy and the ink isn’t cheap. Can anyone recommend a decent printer that prints both black/white and color and the ink won’t cost more than the printer?
I know that not everyone needs a printer, but she really wants to bring one.

D has an HP Office Jet Pro 8500 A Premium. We have been very happy with it…doesn’t drink ink, duplexes, prints in color, cartridges are not too expensive and are available at Sams Club. Watch for sales on printers at Staples, Office Depot, Costco, and Sams Club. You can get a great deal. Beware of buying too many ink cartridges at one time. The printer will refuse cartridges with expired dates.

I vote for a B&W laser. My feeling is that you don’t need color very often and when you do, you can use the computer labs or find a friend.

We have an HP office jet 8600. It has a lot of nice features (you can print to it from iphone or ipad, easy 2 sided printing, you can scan right to a flashdrive), and it hasn’t been a big ink drinker. The biggest issue is that it requires a good chunk of desktop real estate - it does not have a small footprint. We may get one for D to take to school, though.
