Any recommendations on what type (and specifically what model) printer to get? I dont have a truck load of money to spend on a really nice printer, but i would like something affordable yet good quality and efficient. I was thinking just a b/w laser printer... but that means no color. Any help would be amaaaazing!

id get a printer with a built in scanner and copier. i think hp has one for not a lot of money. im sure it wont be great for hi-res stuff, but its perfect for college use (can print your basic word documents+space efficient).

Yeah, most printers are actually quite cheap. The companies who sell them make most of their money on the ink cartridges, so as long as you arn't using it to print flyers and just for the occasional assignment, you should be ok financially.

it depends on what youre going to be doing in college too. i mean, i bet an economics student is gonna print out loads of B/W pages. a b/w laser would work out good here.

if i had to get one, id get a colour printer with copier and scanner. its a good option.

HP LaserJet 1022. It may cost $200, but I've had mine for about a year and have yet to buy a new toner. This is after probably about 3500-4000 pages of use. It's fast, compact, and easy on the eyes. The quality of text is also better than just about any inkjet.

It will work on a PC or a Mac with OS X. If you've got OS 9 forget it. I should also mention that it is black and white.

If you were to get an $80 inkjet, you would have spent more on ink in the long run than you would have if you had just bought the laser. It pays itself off.

i still say it depends on how much youre gonna be using the printer. if youre not gonna be using it a lot. lets say 20 pages a week, then a inkjet would workl out better. plus, youd get color.

We have printers on every other floor in the lounges in our res halls, and printers on every floor of the academic center, so students don't really need to have their own.

Of course, I'm sure it varies between colleges.

Thats actually very true. i think a printer is not a neccessity, i think i can do without one. but Wake Forest gives me a printer along with my thinkpad. so i dont have to worry about it much.

thank you all so much! I will most likely be majoring in bio (definately a science) at the university of maryland. from my experiances in high school, i tend to prefer printing things rather than reading them online (well, long articles or whatnot where highlighting would be of assistance). this also goes for printing out lecture notes (powerpoints and whatnot). i will be bringing my desktop with me (at least for the first year), so i thought a printer would really be a smart option for taking things on the go. I guess if anyone can offer insight as to if i should go laser or inkjet as a bio major that would be great. I actually have both at home, but the inkjet is the only one that is connected to my computer via wireless. i find that i will use it out of ease but if im printing something long, i will transfer it to the laser. Additionally, laser printers tend to be a lot bulkier... something i may not have room for. hmm, any revised suggestions?

i am going to get a b/w laser printer and then a multi-task inkjet that scams and copies etc. You can get both pretty cheap from walmart and such and if you want to look up special deals her is two sites:
www.slickdeals.net
and
www.bensbargains.net (if it is not net thn just search on google for it)

Both these sites can have some really good deals.

Students I've talked to say they e-mail more essays then they hand in.

Don't bother about getting an all in one. What you want is a good laser printer for printing lots, fast, and very economical on ink. And unless you want to spend a gigantic amount of money on a printer, just a printer (not an all in one), black and white, typically fits the description.

I totally agree with MacTech. The only thing is that if you dont have spare $200 for printer, go for HP LaserJet 1020, or something from HP LaserJet 10xx series. They are quite cheap and all of them are really great printers for a college student.

I found it good enough to get a cheap ink printer so that I could do color printing when I needed to. I can send longer assignments directly to printers at the library and pick it up...

After our school switched to all black and white printers I realized how much I missed the color...so I got an all in one w/color (all in one mainly because I copy evvvvvvery important document that I mail, and I like being able to make duplicates of notes for studying)

I personally got through 3 years of college w/o a printer and now in grad school never use my personal printer! You pay technology fees for a reason in college, which most times include an insanely high printing quota at computer labs (I never reached it, no matter how hard I tried at Pitt). All you have to do is put your files on a jump drive (or your ftp space) and go to a computer lab and print your papers off without having to use your paper and ink (ink is expensive!).
