Anyone know if there are any private, renewable scholarships out there?

You would need to check the policies of the scholarships. There are thousands of scholarships out there.

The national ones are renewable…Gates, etc. but you missed the deadline for those of you are a senior.

private renewable scholarships are very rare. There are a few big ones, like Gates, but most/all deadlines have passed.

There are few incentives for private entities to fund renewable merit awards. A few will do it for low income students. Most private entities have such limited funds, that they can only offer small one time awards…one time so that they can award to new students the following year.

are you an international student?

No just wondering if there were any such scholarships available. They seem pretty rare.

Yeah, I missed a lot of the big ones which I am mad about, but there’s nothing I can do now except for apply to more scholarships :)

I think my daughter gets emails from collegegreenlight all the time about scholarships, but most of them have a lot if competition.

For students who have faced adversity there is the Horatio Alger scholarship in several states, also there is the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship for high-achieving freshmen and transfer students with need.

But like others said these deadlines were in November I think.

If you’re a member of NHS I think every high school can nominate a few students depending on size of graduating class. But I think those are one-time awards.

Your guidance counselor should have a list of local scholarships from rotary clubs and such, but these are smaller awards and often one-time only.

The best scholarships are from the colleges you apply to. Some will give significant merit to high stats students or need based aid. If you need scholarships you need to apply to colleges which are likely to give them.

A lot of deadlines have passed for these also or will soon.

Should I apply to scholarships that are based on financial need? I wouldn’t qualify my parents as low income, but with 4 kids going to college in 8 years, there’s not a lot of money to go around. School I can afford is around the 15k/year range.

I was reading your thread from September. Did you end up applying to Alabama?

I think you would have a good chance for significant merit at University of Pittsburgh.
With your 4.0 GPA, top class rank and scores you might get the full tuition scholarship.
Pitt superscores across SAT and ACT. They take the highest English and math from ACT and CR and math from SAT. So for you that would be 35 math and 750 CR. That should be enough I think for full tuition.
Of course there is no guarantee, but students with similar stats have received them and being from Idaho definitely helps. The online app is not too time consuming, there is an essay of 7,000 character or less. Supplemental info can include letters of recommendation and list of EC activities, these can be emailed to the office of admission with your name, address and birthdate on it. The deadline to be considered for scholarships is Jan 15 and everything has to be received by then. You’ want to make sure supplemental info has arrived before scores and transcript, because when they receive the required items they can review your file. But keep in mind scores might take a week to arrive.
The students who have been offered the full tuition scholarship also got an invitation to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship, which is a competitive (10-15 awarded) full ride.

You would not find out about need-based aid until after the FASFA is filed next year around January, most schools will probably send their financial aid letters in the spring.

Did you run the net price calculators on every school’s website that you applied to with your parents estimated income and assets for this year? That might tell you if you might be eligible for federal aid like Pell grant. Merit aid is not always shown in the calculator unless it asks about gpa, scores. Alabama’s npc should tell you.

If the only affordable school for you so far is Idaho and you want to have options come April I would apply to Alabama (before Dec15), and Pitt and maybe Temple.

I did apply to Alabama and got a letter about their scholarship (I get full tuition OOS, plus the engineering scholarship). I’m a bit concerned about fit though, I’m not too concerned about sports and not interested in Greek life at the moment, but at least it’s affordable. Not to mention pretty warm during the winters :D

I’ll check out Pitt, it might be a good match. I have definitely been considering applying to another school, one where I would have a decent chance at merit and is ranked in the top 25-75 engineering, so this might be it.
It’s at least helpful to know that some schools still offer merit this late, I thought my options were pretty much gone at this point.

Maybe you could visit UA later when you have all your offers in to make a final decision? I’ve only heard good things about their engineering. And Pitt is well regarded for engineering too. Yes you will have a bit more time to apply there.

That’s been my plan so far - see if I can get anything from my reach schools and if not, decide between my safeties.

Thanks again for the heads up.

Sure, you really can’t wait until you hear from all the reaches, otherwise you might not end up with any affordable schools.

But you’re ahead of the game, with your acceptance from Idaho and UA.

And good luck with your application to Pitt, who knows, you might end up competing with my daughter for the Chancellor’s.

Oh I read “ARandomGreek” that’s why I asked, lol. You can always take a gap year and apply in the new round.

@mommdc
Can’t wait as in applying for scholarships, or applying to colleges, or both? Not entirely sure I understand your above post.

In any case, I plan on applying to all the scholarships I can over the next couple months, as well as applying to a more midrange school.

I meant by the time you get decision from reach schools it may be too late for merit scholarships.

Did you do the scholarship application for UA? Also did you apply for honors college or computer based honors?
I think @mom2collegekids would be able to tell you more about this, I hope she sees this.

@mommdc
Ok, that’s what I thought you meant. I applied EA to all, so most of them should be coming this week.

I’m putting in my scholarship application today or tomorrow. Accepted into the honors college as well, and submitting UFE this afternoon. Deadline for CBH is today so if I have enough time I’ll try to submit that as well. It’s been a crazy week…

Good, seems like you got it all covered.

@ARandomGeek

If you become an eng’g student at Bama, you don’t have to worry about sports or Greek life. Most eng’g students have nothing to do with Greek life, especially male students. They simply do not have time or interest.

As for sports…some engineering students like attending football games and some do not. It’s not a big deal if you don’t. Bama’s engineering and its honors dorms are on the North side of campus… Greek houses and the stadium are on the South side of campus… A nice separation if that is desired.
