That schedule is subject to change … my D attended an earlier NSO session and her schedule was changed more than once prior to the date given as the day schedules became final.

I too signed up for an early NSO thinking D would have better options but was told this was not the case. They plug courses and 2nd and 3rd options in but the actual classes are not truely assigned until all students have gone through NSO. (At least that’s what they told me) They do it this way so no one is at a disadvantage during the NSO period.

Anyone out there in the business school? My D did not have the FYS on her sheet but says she does another form of this class as a business student? Is this correct? she has a full schedule but just want to be sure she doesn’t miss out. Do they just plug this is or should it be on their course sheet?

socaldad, my S is a Comm major, and if your D is at all interested in that, she should know that there’s a sequence of four courses that needs to be taken in the first four semesters. The top 125 students, based on the GPA in those four classes, are allowed into the major. Before that, they’re called ‘Communication Interest’ majors:

[Department of Communication](<a href=“College of Arts & Sciences”>College of Arts & Sciences)

My D had a late NSO and, even after her schedule was on UDSIS it was changed. That was made very clear in her year. Perhaps that has changed?

Socaldad, there isn’t a lot of room for exploration at the front end because of things like booklady was pointing out. My D’s both majors have either required or suggested sequences and if you don’t take the classes in that sequence sometimes you can be shut out.

The two previous posts make good points. The schedule on a students UDSIS site after their NCO meeting is tentative. The final schedules are not completed until early august. There are a number of freshman courses that are initially reserved for students with certain majors. Once NSO is completely over any remaining open slots in these courses can then be taken by students who are “undeclared”. I suspect that is why they requested your D get back to them once NCO is over. They cannot place her in certain classes until they know what openings are available. I would suggest that your D comply with UD’s request. There may be some limitations as to what courses will be available but this is one of the risks in applying undeclared. I think UD does a pretty good job of trying to meet everyones requests but it is not always possible (they don’t have unlimited staff). Best wishes to your D.

Gee socaldad I hope that all this gets satisfactorily worked out but it sounds very frustrating. It may be that as an “undecided” major UD feels they can “plug in” various available courses regardless of interest and I wonder if she might be better off seeing if she could change to a specific major (eg Communication) which might ensure that she is getting the Comm courses that are needed to apply for the major? Just a thought…

I also wonder whether she might be able to remedy the situation during drop/add period in the beginning of the term. Does UD have a procedure for that?

Regardless of what happens for first semester, at least your D will be able to pick her own courses and schedule (I think) for the second semester, and she’ll have advanced standing with all her community college credits.

socaldad, were the two classes chosen just random? Nothing useful at all? If so, possibly they were placeholders so she could get her correct tuition bill based on credits because the tuition bill will come before schedules are set in stone.

UD really does grant preference to majors in class selection. Very significant consideration and sometimes it’s a huge problem.

Lefty1, I looked up the Lerner requirements and some of the majors have FYS and some have Basics of Business as FYS. It depends on the major: Management, Marketing, Operations Management, and International Business have Basics of Business listed a freshman course. My DS will be in accounting and his is listed as FYS.

thanks Jbsmom! also can someone direct me to where on d’s account her schedule will appear? being we only went tuesday hers is prob not up yet but I don’t seem to see where if will appear.
thanks in advance! :)

nevermind! I found them! D is in basics of business so I guess she’s set for her FYS class :)

update,

D Got three emails from advisor. She suggested that they communicate via email. She seems willing to try to sort things out via this method. My d (with a little help) will construct a long email with her history of transfer credits, her thoughts on majors, and her concerns with current schedule. I feel a bit more optimistic, and appreciate the response. i will keep you all updated. Thanks for the communication advise. I am hoping my D can take one of those courses. we will see…

I’m glad they are responsive and seem willing to help. My DD has had a very good experience with advisors, from orientation through declaring her major (when she got an advisor in her dept). Going into Spring semester registration during that first year, she took it upon herself to be very organized when going in to meet with her advisor before registering for the next semester (e.g., breadth requirements, major/minor classes, etc). UD gives the students the tools but, based on what the advisor has said to DD, not every student takes advantage of them. socaldad, I’m sure your DD will be one who does!

D looked in her UDSIS account online and went to “Student Center” and then “My Class Schedule” and it is empty despite going to NSO last Thursday. Is that the right place to look? Thanks.

Bill,
it will probably appear by today or tomorrow. I believe my d’s was up by friday of last week and we went last Tuesday.
I believe you have the correct location where it will be posted.

Thanks for the info.

For anyone yet to go to NSO, if they don’t have your info right when you show up, call the NSO office. My D was assigned to a university studies group and should have been in B school group. She spoke to 3 or 4 of the on-site coordinators and each said they couldn’t change her program for the day. She texted me (I wasn’t there) and I called the NSO office and they promptly and professionally resolved it.

This isn’t particular to Socaldad’s problem but it does flow from NSO. D’s schedule starts 8 a.m. on Monday, continues with that class at 8 a.m. on Wed and Friday (with other classes in between) and ends at 7 p.m. on Friday. Would appreciate any thoughts on getting that schedule changed. The “problem class” is 5-7 on Friday eve. It’s a calc 221. D has calc lecture for 3 days a week for one hour in the morning, a calc “discussion” for one hour (again in the morning), and then on Friday, another lecture, for 2 hours from 5-7. Next to the Friday on the “Fall Semester Schedule” it says “See note” but there is no note. Any ideas? Haven’t yet contacted advisor.

Are you sure that Friday evening session isn’t the test appointment? In some math/science classes, the official test periods are evenings or weekends several times a semester, not every week.

My D was told by her advisor not to pass out when she sees a class appear at 8pm on a Friday night on her schedule. She was told she would only be required to go to that class about once a month or less as it was only for tests. It appears every week on the schedule but that’s not the case. As of now it’s not on her schedule but we shall see… :)

Good report…My D has been in an ongoing email exchange with her advisor. It took a couple of attempts, but she now has a better choice of classes. She is even taking one course in a possible major choice. This will give her a chance to examine that. She is only going to take four courses plus her frosh seminar. I think taking one less course will help her ease her transition. Since she is entering with 16 credits, I think she should ease into things. She only has one class that she wishes to change. She will wait til Aug.1st or the drop add period. All is much better now…

Thanks lefty1 and zoosermom. D is unable to contact school/advisor for around a week and this will provide a measure of relief until she can reach out to the school (as I attempt to learn to let her deal with things on her own).
