Hey guys, so I'm writing my UC essays but have a problem. I have absolutely no clue what I want to do. I'm applying undeclared but isn't it recommended to address your major in the essay?

I think you NEED to declare your major. My older brother got accepted into USC (i know it’s not the same as the UCs but still) and he said that if he hadn’t declared a major he wouldn’t have gone in.

Let me tell you why: If you apply as undeclared, the college will think less of you. You are liable to switch majors constantly and never get a degree and end up dropping out.

HOWEVER, if you put Business, for example, as your major (even though you’re undecided and aren’t sure if that’s really what you want to do), they’ll think highly of you - especially if you somehow include your ambitions to be a businessperson (or whatever) in your essay. Then the admissions counselor reading your application will think : Wow, this kid is determined and confident! He ( or she) really knows what they want to do in life! I can trust them to study hard to achieve their goal of becoming the businessman (or fill in the blank for the major/career you choose).

As for the essay, as I said: I need help myself. I opened up a Word document on my laptop and copied and pasted the prompts for the UC essays and the USC essay. And then I closed the document and it’s been closed ever since. I don’t know what to put. I, like you, am not sure of what I’m going to be. I think I’ll choose business administration just because I have really high Writing and Critical Reading skills but not so good Math skills (referring to the SAT, as you can probably tell). But I don’t know what world I have come from and I don’t know of any experiences that have affected me greatly.
