Problems With Critical Reading

When I practice CR, I just stare at the passage and it takes a while to get the author's main idea into my head. I usually get 95% of the questions right, but I usually go a lot overtime.. Anyone have suggestions as to how I could work through and comprehend the CR passages faster?

Read faster & force yourself to like the passages.

I usually glaze over prepositional phrases and descriptions. It’s just something I do when I try to weed out unimportant stuff.

You need to read actively and “engage” with the passage. There is no easy way to practice this, it really comes down to how much much you concentrate.

On some practice tests I scored -2/-3 on CR, on others I scored as badly as -15 resulting from losing concentration, not engaging with passage, etc. However, come the SAT, I somehow forced myself to concentrate immensely on each passage and ended up with raw score 67 on CR. So I guess I’m saying, force yourself to concentrate, perhaps by emulating SAT conditions.

I’m not good in Reading, but if I were you I would read a lot.

^ Agreed. The best way to read with celerity is to READ.
^^ How did you simulate test conditions? I am also trying to do that in my future practise exams but I don’t know how I should do so. Should I add an experimental section? Or should I finish slightly under-timed?

Oh, I also find it helps if you read in an active voice. Maybe even try reading in an accent. It helps me engage in the passage like the previous poster suggested.

I timed myself very strictly on each section and had a penalty/reward system. I would penalise myself with a 1km run every time I found myself losing concentration during the passage, but this would be negated if I scored full marks on the section. Weird method I suppose, but it worked for me lol.
