Production Design and Theatre Design Schools?

I've noticed that most of the threads in this particular forum are all geared to those going into MT or Acting programs at these various schools, but there is little to no info to some of the other parts of drama programs, specifically with that of theatre design/technology and production design. What art schools have highly esteemed programs in these fields? I'm looking at Tisch and Emerson, but I would like some more options as well.

Thanks!

Here are two threads that may be of some interest to you. Hope there is some information here you find helpful:

University of Michigan! We have a BFA Design & Production program. Absolutely loving it here. If you want more information, just shoot me a PM :)

Those threads were incredibly informing as to what to expect within the programs and whatnot, so thank you.

ZacharyCort,

Otterbein belongs to the group of schools that hold the Unified Auditions annually. The name implies that what we do is audition actors and singers, and that is true. But almost all us also offer BFA degrees in a wide variety of design and technology areas. Here’s the list:

Scene, Lighting, Sound, Costume, and Make Up Design
Stage Management
Technical Direction
Theatre Education
Theatre Management
Theatre Technology

We do make the disclaimer that not all concentrations are available at all institutions. Otterbein doesn’t offer a major in Technical Direction, for example, but many of our BFA Design/Tech graduates are technical directors around the country. Similar examples can be found at our sister schools.

It would be worth your time to check out the Unified Auditions colleges and universities. Here’s the website: [National Unified Auditions](http://unifiedauditions.com/)

All of us who have programs in theatre design and technology hold portfolio reviews at the unified sites, so it isn’t necessary for you to make campus visits to all schools. We’d love to see you in NY, Chicago or LA.

Incidentally, as all of my colleagues know–but very few prospective students and their families do–students interested in majoring in design/tech are beyond gold. They are platinum. We all need more of them and there are too few to meet our needs. It is exactly the opposite of the situation with performers. And because the industry is similar, the placement rate for design/tech graduates is often 100%. So if your daughter wants to go into design/tech, Dad, she’s pretty much guaranteed a job when she graduates. Your son, too.

Hope this helps.

Take a look at Fordham LC.

[Design and Production Major](http://www.fordham.edu/academics/programs_at_fordham_/theatre_department/prospective_students/training__curriculum/_design_and_producti/index.asp)

Coastal Carolina offers a BFA in Design and Technology. They are not a part of the Unified schools but I believe will be in Chicago during Unifieds in 2012 just as they were in 2011:

[CCU Department of Theatre](http://www.coastal.edu/theatre/html/bfa-technical-theatre.html)

The USC School of Theatre offers these degrees in your field of interest:

Theatre Design: BFA
Theatre Stage Management: BFA
Theatre Technical Direction: BFA

Los Angeles is a huge entertainment center. There are opportunties for internships and interaction with the Thornton School of Music and the School of Cinematic Arts.

USC is a private university. It has a large financial aid program which includes need based financial aid using the FAFSA and CSS applications and many merit scholarships.

I’ll be a Theatre design major at USC in the Fall. Other schools I looked into include:

NYU, Fordham, Boston University, Emerson, Northeastern, Boston College, Wagner College, Carnegie Mellon, Ithaca College, SUNY Purchase and Sarah Lawrence. In the end I applied for USC, Emerson, Fordham and SUNY Purchase.

Feel free to PM if you have any questions :)
