Professors call admitted students now?

Oops! Forgot to say that the phone calls were to the Early Writes. They also issue a personal invitation to Accepted Students' Weekend. This was followed up with a letter about the weekend, then a follow-up phone call from admissions about the weekend.

My daughter was called a few years ago by a prof (top 20 LAC). Then, seemed clearly a way of letting kids know they are on the "in" list.

Dean J, that was pretty harsh for a little tongue in cheek remark! And what in my comment implied that I faulted the professor? Of course I know that a faculty member has no control over financial aid decisions, while I usually value your remarks, you really over reacted here. When the cost is 45k+ per year, yes money is a consideration, particularly from a school that touts it's great financial aid.

Oh dear, epiphany, I'm sorry if you thought I was attacking you. There was no intent to "flame" you. I just wanted to put the idea out there that the callers are just trying to help the student with their decision and aren't in control of aid.

And the U in question knows whether the student can afford that institution because they have all the pertinent financial info about him or her if that student has applied for aid with/at that institution.

This is the misconception that I was trying to address. The faculty and students calling don't know a prospective student's financial information.

The call nights have worked the same way at the schools at which I've worked. There are "call sheets" made with each applicant's name, HS, home town, possible major and phone number on them. Students or faculty show up and go through the sheets. Faculty obviously look for students interested in their department. Students might look for the same or for someone from their home state. That's it...the student and faculty callers don't see applications or financial information.

I just think that perhaps profs should be given a list of accepted students who have not applied for aid?

It's an idea, though I'd hate for a kid to feel neglected because they applied for aid.

Another point to remember: some schools keep admission and financial aid completely separate. Opinions about this go back and forth. Some think it's important for us to know about financial need, some don't think it's important. I've worked at both kinds of schools...but that's a whole other discussion.

Well, my son had the President of the United States call him. ;)

Dean J,
Regarding your last post. I understand that academics and FA are separate dept's and concerns, but the point is, that yes, in that case, despite "feeling neglected," maybe it would be better not to call those who did apply for aid. Or maybe not. We've been called by high schools before when an acceptance was given but no aid offered, but we did have to remind them (they already knew it) that the student could not attend without aid. I guess we weren't insulted by the call or anything, but our reaction was, "What's the point?"

It's one thing to ask for aid. Lots of middle class people do, & may or may not receive it, yet may decide to attend anyway, & "find a way" to meet the gap between affordability & cost. In those cases, phone calls can be helpful. It's another thing when the aid is essential.

I actually don't see a problem with "neglecting" students by not giving them an add'l phone call. I mean (& as you acknowledge), there's nothing mandatory about these phone calls. They're extras, niceties. And if the college doesn't have the money, they don't have the money. (Could be a part of their Enrollment Management realities that the student will have to deal with, not receive soliciting phone calls, & move on.)

"Well, my son had the President of the United States call him."

I got a call from God. (Did you know She went to a women's college? ;))
