Professors? Classes? How do we '10s decide what to take?

I'm a '10 at Dartmouth and I can't wait to start...

But how do we pick our classes? I keep hearing "base your class choices on the professors, not the title of the class." I def believe/agree with this, but I have no concept of which professors are awesome/terrible. I'm looking to be an economics major ultimately, so I would consider taking Economics for fall term, but I hear that it's extra-hard the fall term to 'weed out' students.

Which professors/classes do you guys recommend and why?

I've also heard that we should take easy classes the first term so as to acclimate to the college without having killer classes. How true is this? Should we still to 'rocks for jocks' and language or whatever 'easier' classes?

And after fall term, do you guys recommend taking 4 or more classes? It's not too difficult, is it?

Also, if I've tested out of the Math 3 class, but DON'T want to take calculus at all, is there any way I can take a business-oriented (finance?) class as my math requirement?

I'd love to hear from any Dartmouth students, and also who other '10s are thinking about classes/ have heard so far...

I'm also an incoming '10, so what I'm thinking about for courses has no actual basis in experience.

I don't know what to say about the professors, but you can go to http://sa.dartmouth.edu/guide/ to see reviews for classes and professors alike. It has every class offered in the past up to 2001, I think, but not all classes have reviews. From what I've gathered, this site is put up by the student association. You sign in with your blitz name and password.

Also, people sometimes say take it easy, but what fun is that? Take advantage of what Dartmouth has to offer and don't worry too much about how hard your classes are going to be. You can always switch them around, to a certain extent.

I also recommend the SA site. Remember, the teacher is more important than the subject, so look under the course review, where it says "other courses by ..." And don't worry too much about the numerical ratings, but definitely read the indivdual comments.

Hey im a 09'
As for picking your classes, the 10's will choose their classes during orrientation the placement tests. They offer placement tests for math, special lab science sections, languages, etc. As for what classes to pick I think it important to take into consideration what the class is about and the professor. Second try to get a good balance of writing intense, math/science intense, and reading intense courses so as not to overwhelm yourself your first quarter. I think this is important also because your transitioning to college work and finding the balance between academics and your social life.

Personal Anecdote: I took three reading intense courses(govt, writing, and AAAS) my first fall term and it was very hardcore, winter I balanced it out and I had a much better term

As for professors you gotta wait till you get here, go to some dept open houses and talk to some upperclass majors which are always great resources

DO NOT Take four courses your first term. Two reasons, one, your only allowed to take three 4-course terms before you have to pay extra and secondly you will definitely overwhelm yourself, Im contemplating taking four courses and im still skeptical about it as a sophomore...lol

Yes, intro coures are weeders, so beware, theyre generally good courses but they are meant to weed out people who either are premeds or are not sure about pursuing a major in that department. Try a upper level course they generally are more focussed on certain topics and better than the intros.

As for the MAth or QDS requirement you can take a lot of courses, personally im taking a govt statistics course to fufill mine, but i've heard of people using Linguistics, social science statistics courses, or math classes to fufill this requirement

Have you taken any of the honors intro courses, like Chemistry 10? If so, what did you think about those intro courses? Also, what is AAAS?

AAAS is African and Afriacan-American Studies.

I have not taken either Chem 10 or the Honors Bio Courses, but I do know people who have and they are very intense.

Is Chem 10 the honors equivalent of Chem 5 AND 6?

Yes, chem 10 gives credit for chem 5 and 6 (yes in the time slolt of only one course).

Yes, chem 10 gives credit for chem 5 and 6 (yes in the time slolt of only one course).

What exactly is covered in Chem 10? I took AP Chemistry and am hoping to pass the placement test into Chem 10. What should I expect, if anybody knows?

I got a 5 on the BC exam. But I'm comtemplating actually taking two credits and moving up two math classes. Has anyone moved up two classes and can tell me how they felt about that move? Or any advice about what to do?

Also for people wanting to major in the sciences or do pre-med, what kind of classes did you take freshman fall term?

Does ap stat place you out of math/govt/econ/etc 10?

yes to flagship

if your major has gov 10 as an elective, can ap stats count towards the major?
