I am going to be an incoming freshman at University of Maryland. I would like to know who is the best professor for MATH140 – calculus I and CMSC131 – Object Oriented Programming I. Here are the teachers that I have currently scheduled for fall 2012:

Hellerstein – ECON200 micro-economics
Okoudjou – MATH140 – Calculus I
Plane – CMSC131 Object Oriented Programming I
ENGL101

Should I take D. Gulick instead of Okoudjou? Also should I take Golub instead of Jane? Any opinions on the teachers and who I should switch to would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you checked them out on ourumd.com? I think that D. Gulick gets high marks, but D2 dropped the class after one meeting and ended up taking a different (i.e easier) math class that she needed for her major, so no personal experience with him.

Yes, ourumd.com is great (thank you astrophysicsmom for being the first to bring this resource to everyone’s attention in your awesome post for new Terps a while back!).

One thing to note is to be sure to read all the comments in full. At orientation, they said typically only students who feel strongly --either for or against – the teacher submit ratings/comment, so take what you read with a grain of salt. Some are more detailed of why they liked or didn’t and are more helpful than the rants. I seem to remember reading that D. Gulick is the one who writes the tests for all the sections, so that may give an advantage/make up for being harder…?

A student orientation advisor also suggested finding other students who have learning styles/work habits similar to your own and asking about their experience/opinions (obviously, will only help for future semesters, after you get there and get to know other students).

ourumd is definitely an awesome site, but keep in mind that people who post are posting voluntarily. That means usually people who had a great experience or really bad experience will post their feelings, so it could be biased. So don’t rip your hair out about it, if all the teachers have bad ratings.
