There hasn’t been (to date) an eliminated designer because another (or others) helped them - there have been instances where a designer has been chastised for getting copious amounts of help…from my pov, “smoker boy” didn’t simply have help…Bones designed and executed (sewed) the entire gown.
This is Project Runway, “smoker boy” or any of the others are always up for elimination. Usually the term “one or more of you will be eliminated” is used.
It’s all good, if he (smoker boy) has the chops he’ll rise to see another day. Personally I’ve eliminated him from my own top designers list. Getting help is one thing, I’m all for others helping, in fact it irks me when designers don’t help, but having another (or others) design a complete gown, and sew it for you…nah, that’s my line.
While “smoker boy” wasn’t eliminated this time due to being on the winning team I’m guessing (or hoping) the judges won’t give him much leeway if his work is subpar going forward.
Smoker Boy is definitely on the judges’ radar. It won’t be long now. He only survived the first challenge because he was on the winning team.
Speaking of (over) helping, remember the twins when one did most of the work for the other? They both survived for several episodes until they were forced into a head to head competition after which the remaining twin exited due to cheating.
I’m not a big fan of group projects (on PR or at schools) because I do think one or two do the majority of the work, but sometimes that’s how they work. There is also a great deal of editing to these programs.
A year or two ago one designer became ill and the others did almost all her work for one week. I think she dropped out the next week but she wasn’t eliminated.
Definitely would prefer that first challenge to not have been a team one, especially if they wanted designers to show who they are. I like it when their abilities are challenged by fabric options rather than by team stuff.
I
Judges always talk about not losing yourself in team challenges but never seems clear when you’re going to get slammed for not following rules. Several on winning team were praised for following instincts and not including the bow which was suppose to be cohesive element.
Sometimes I’m not sure what makes a collection cohesive.
Agree that a team challenge out of the gate was tough.
Wow. What a messy episode. I can’t say I feel too bad for Meg. She was little too opinionated for my taste but it might have just been an intentional edit given her decision.
Getting back to the fashion. Happy with the winner.
The judges weren’t into the black outfits this week. The outfits with a lot of color were either the best or the worst.
Agree - bye bye Meg! I think she walked in the door with too many emotions going on (including recent death of her mom) to cope with the entire PR situation.
Wow, I thought SO many of these designs were notable! Hard to pick a winner. The judges seemed REALLY into the top 3-4 designs.
Starting to warm up to some of the contestants.
The “Streetwear” challenge was really great (all the other drama aside, just strictly talking the garments) - Although I think I’m a bit old to wear real “streetwear” or Harajuku, I admire it tremendously. There is something about streetwear/Harajuku that really takes me back to the flower power fashion…the “anything goes” don’t worry about conforming look. When my D was little Punky Brewster’s style was really streetwear/Harajuku. Of course my mini-artist followed along (to my own mother’s horror).
I loved the winning look, and the story behind it. That coat was as close to true haute couture we’ve ever seen on PR at any time. The painting on the back was incredible. I would love to see it in person.
I think there are some very talented designers this season, far more elevated than we’ve seen in a long time.
This is a season I could easily binge watch. So good. Bring on the next episode!
I too am excited about the designers this year and the level some of them seem to be at. It seems that one of the most accomplished so far that they noted in introductions was/is red mustache guy. But personally I haven’t been a big fan so far.
Octavio - his work isn’t for everyone, for sure, but his episode one garment(s) literally had me gasp out loud - his was the all red (elevated) streetwear look -
I wonder if they didn’t show it well on tv….when I look at that pic, I like it a lot!
Seeing so many great designs this week makes me realize that the constraint of a team challenge to present a “cohesive” collection is just not good as a first challenge. Too many designers focused far too much on that aspect of the challenge and lost themselves. Maybe the goal was to see how designers would respond to that added pressure. In the end, I don’t know that either team presented a cohesive collection.
Color (doesn’t have to be the same it just needs to harmonize), silhouette, proportion - those are key elements to a “cohesive” collection - a bow does not a cohesive collection make . Knowing where your “girl” is going doesn’t either. Knowing “who” she is can. Is she feminine, tomboy, classic, hippie chic…those make for a cohesive collection (a perfect example of cohesion - you can recognize a designer’s “hand” on every runway compared to others) there have been several PR contestants that excelled at cohesion as solo designers. It’s very difficult to put 8 strangers together and have them create a cohesive collection. I think PR did it to see if anyone even understands the concept, and also to pinpoint the leaders - a strong leader could have guided a more cohesive collection, even among strangers - it might not have been perfect, but it could come close. Neither team got “cohesive” correct.
Episode 2…what a serious disappointment (not the garments) - the drama. I realize that season was shot in the end of summer 2020, and “we” (the US in general) were at a tipping point of racial tension and frustration (and rightfully so), but holy smokes, this episode was triggering on so many levels. I missed Tim coming in and trying to understand what was going on, be a voice of reason and escort someone out. Christian is definitely not someone who I could imagine doing that. He’s young, and really doesn’t have enough life experience himself to understand the layers of anger that was boiling over in the workroom.
All that to say, unfortunately I need to re-watch the episode because I really would like to focus on the garments…or maybe I’ll let it go, remind myself that the little I do remember of the garments (Prajje’s jacket…Zayden’s jacket…) was enough. I can’t even remember what Octavio put down the runway, and he’s someone I have my eye on.
Agree that things would have gone differently with Tim Gunn around.
I get the feeling that Christian is competing with the designers. He doesn’t want them to be better than he is. Tim was never competing with them and wanted the best for all of them.
Christian is always bringing up what he did (youngest, won this week or that week). He was definitely good, but I don’t think he’s a leader.
Ooohhh I hadn’t thought of that! Good call.
