BLS revises projected job growth for pharmacists to 3% over the next 10 years, or an increase of 9,100. That is 910 new pharmacist job openings per year. About 15,000 pharmacy students graduate each year, and that is not taking into account new schools that continue to open with no end in sight. That is over 16 times more new grads for each job opening.
How many pharmacists retire per year?
Also, the 15,000 new grads per year does not take into consideration the pharmacists that are currently looking for jobs.
@Madison85 - that’s the one statistic I’d like to know also. Are we heading to a large retirement scenario in the next decade or so? I know CVS is allegedly trying to get rid of its older pharmacists…
About 6,800 pharmacists leave the workforce each year. That means we have a surplus of 7,000 out of the 15,000 new graduates, or 48%.
