My daughter received an "outside scholarship" for her Spring semester, (it stated on the tuition bill/2008-09 Academic Year Student Aid Adjustment), we don't know why the scholarship is not in place yet, now we got a message from the college saying her tuition balance is due (in the amount of the promised scholarship). She received the same scholarship last school year and we have fill out the Renewal Report Form and it was approved. My questions are:
1. Is there such a thing like withdrawal /denial a promised scholarship? (we didn't hear anything from the granter yet)
2. Due to the amount of this particular scholarship, her other Federal grant / scholarships have been modified / decreased. What shall we do now?
3. Shall I contact the college tuition office or the scholarship granter?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Definitely contact the financial aid office first! My D’s university has a deferral form you can fill out for expected scholarships and grants that have not yet arrived. There may be a fee (as at my D’s school), but it would be less than late payment fees or the possibility of your D being dropped from classes. As always when discussing financial matters, get first and last names of the people you talk to (or - even better - correspond in writing).

Some scholarships send the entire academic year’s amount to the school at the beginning of the year, and the university holds it until tuition is due each semster (my D has two that were done that way). Have the financial aid office double-check that the funds have not already been received. It also could be that the university needs to send a confimation of enrollment in order to have the scholarship sent, so ask them to do that. Provide the address of the grantor.

After speaking to financial aid, contact the grantor, explain that tuition is due, and ask if there are any additional steps you need to take to have the scholarship released. Have your award letter handy so you can give specifics.

Good luck!

Some scholarships have slow funding- ACG/SMART do not always show up in Aug/Sept, though I think are funded for the year up front. BYRD can be very slow, fall $ showing up in December! Spring funded separately but faster than that.

The same with some others.

You might see a late charge on her account which should/could then be waived/reversed when the amount due is paid with financial aid funds. Call that dept and find out how they process this

Thank you all for the quick respond and helpful information. I’ll definitely follow the suggestions and keep posted on the outcome.

thanks again

You had better check. I had the same thing happen to us first semester for our son. No one was worried, including the college since these funds often come in after the due dates. At the end of the term, it had still not come, and if I didn’t pay the amount, S was not going to be able to register for the next term.

What had happened was that S got an e-mail requesting info for the scholarship, and he blew it off because “THEY ALREADY HAVE THAT INFORMATION.” His words exactly. I was enraged. Good thing he was across the country. Even better, I was able to get the scholarship resurrected. I was scared to death that he lost it for not responding. Danged spoiled kid thinks you fill out info only once? He’s the one who has been in the hospital so much in his life and well knows how many times you have to complete the same danged info. No different for other things in life. I had not been copied in on the info request since he is supposedly a bright, talented, gifted adult who has been awarded money for those attributes, but a doofus who can’t be bothered to give basic info for $5K a year. So we did have that straightened out.

As others have said, the college did reverse the late fees when the amount was received. I ended up chewing my nails while a credit card paid the $2.5K due until the amount came to the college so that he could register and not get shut out of classes.
