Dude, math class doesn’t matter. I took calc in 8th grade and got rejected, compared to this kid who didnt take calc and got in

Is the answer to every question supposed to be in a finite form? Do they accept answers involving […]s? I can’t find a finite form for the critical formulas in questions 2 and 5 and the last third of question 6, but I have them in […] forms.

I can’t really give you replies on the content of the questions, but it’s honestly really important to show any intuition that you used in solving the problems. If you noticed a pattern that seems unrelated, note it! PROMYS is all about making conjectures and “thinking deeply of simple things”, as you’ll be told on the first day there. I was a first year last year and I’ll be going back if I don’t get into a program at Michigan State called HSHSP. It was certainly a great time and gives you the ideal balance between hard math and fun. Being surrounded by so many incredibly intelligent kids is a breath of fresh air for a lot of people there (as they’ll tell you :P) and you have a chance to explore Boston (which, I came to find, is an absolutely beautiful city) and learn some fascinating math.

(kind of curious to know who the other posters are. Hi Urc! I know you )

I was just wondering if anyone has gotten accepted/rejected yet. Darn! I’m so nervous! My entire summer relies on this! 6 weeks…(long whistle for dramatic effect)

Given how many people apply, is April 14 pretty much too late to send in an application?

@evbeso
April 14 should be fine - last year, I didn’t send in my application until around mid-April, and I was (somehow) accepted.

@bookworm
Write whatever you want to write for the essays. This sounds very stereotypical, but trying to anticipate what the people reviewing the applications want to hear is more trouble than it’s worth. On a side note, “simple” math and “abstract” math are not separate subsets of math. The math covered at promys requires no calculus; that’s simple, right? The benefit of going to promys is experiencing depth in math. A quote on top of one of the first p-sets, if I recall correctly, said “Think deeply of simple things.”

i’m open for questions as well re: anything promys-related!

I’m just scared that for some of the problems when I solved them, they wanted an answer that was more…advanced. And I feel like some of the problems, I couldn’t even understand! So things are definitely not looking good for me… :(

@mathdork best friend? maybe?

April 14th is DEFINITELY fine…I sent my application in on May 28th last year and the deadline was May 30th. I got in :)

I think I’m going back!

ahhh so close to finishing my app! writing out questions now, but i still have one unsolved question >.< i’m really nervous…i wanna get in badly haha

@Urc: I wanna get in so badly too! I’ve actually begun to dream about it which is REALLY odd…but I can’t help it. I hope we all get in! Does anyone know what the acceptance rate is? Just so I know what decision to expect…

…acceptance rates, speculation, all that jazz is useless. Just do your best on your application test and clearly display the fact that you want to go there. Make sure that you want to go for reasons other than to college app it because a) the people reading your app will see right through it, and b) if they somehow don’t, you’ll hate it there if you don’t love math. Go there to have a ballin’ summer with some ballin’ people and to learn some ballin’ math. Don’t worry about your chances and that kinda thing: TRY YOUR HARDEST and you’ll win :)

I think I need to I ask them to give me an early decision because I have to fill out my application for my regular application and I need to know if I’ll even be able to go this summer since PROMYS is 6 WEEKS. Do you think this will hurt my chances of admission???

Has anyone heard from SUMaC for 2011?

Has anyone heard from HCSSiM for 2011?

HCSSiM emailed me a copy of the IT today

You just got the IT today? Yow. My son returned his two weeks ago…they told him to have it back by April 10.

Oh…well I just applied today on their online form, so it made sense I’d get it today

Is PROMYS admission first come first serve?

I got accepted to HCSSiM today… they said its pretty competitive this year and event admits have to resubmit answers to unsolved problems

It’s rolling basis but still REALLY selective. And I’ve heard of ppl getting in when submitting their applications like 2 days before the deadline. If you’re worried about all the spots having been filled up, try anyways! You never know! ;)
