From what i have read, I think that if you are borderline, they keep your application and if they have spots left at the end, they accept you.

Applied for PROMYS this year as a sophomore. It’s my first year trying so we’ll see how it goes. I think I got all the questions correct, but it’s out of my hands now.

Anyone accepted to either yet? I am sending my application in tomorrow.

I’m still working on the application problems, I’m about halfway through.

And just to check, how long should I expect my math teacher to take to write the recommendation after I ask him? If I asked him to write it this coming Monday (April 2), would it be reasonable to expect him to have sent the recommendation in by mid April (two weeks later), or do you think it might take longer?

Two weeks seems reasonable although you should discuss this with him.

I’m sending in my app tomorrow. Should I also send the huge mound of scrap paper I used while doing the questions? Also, will my being an eight grader, doing 9 problems, and not being in any special math thingys hurt my chances of making it into PROMYS?

PROMYSHopeful,

To be honest, the application essentially lies on how well you do on the problems. This doesn’t necessarily mean the more you get correct, the higher your chances are of making into PROMYS. It’s really the quality of your solutions. I’ve heard somebody get in by answering 4. But, I’ve also heard of people getting rejected with 9 answered. Also, if by “math thingy” you mean a program, then I don’t think your chances will be hurt.

accepted back in March - 3 weeks after application

From what I’ve heard from Shapiro, as of this past Sunday (so this doesn’t account for last minute applicants) the acceptance rate for Ross was around 1/3. However, if you applied last minute, expect it to be very difficult to get in. The last I heard, there were over 40 kids who had just applied for the 10 remaining spots in the program.
If you get into this program, ATTEND! I was so fortunate as to be in this program last year and (spoiler alert) the group of counselors and junior counselors this summer will be fantastic.

@syph13 i submitted my application in the first week of April and have not received a decision yet. do you know about when i should expect one?

My son was accepted to PROMYS about two weeks ago. He’s currently a high school freshman (age 14). Does anyone know what percentage of PROMYS participants are typically in that age range?

Id say that about 10-15% are freshman, judging from the facebook page and other posts ive read, but I cant be sure. I am going to promys this summer, and I have two other friends who are also probably going. we are all freshmen

@perpeetr, it’s great that you will be going with friends. My son doesn’t know anyone who’s ever gone, but I am assuming (or at least hoping) that they will have some sort of icebreaking activities at the start.

Hi everybody,

Approximately how many days after you sent your application did you hear about your admission result? I sent mine two weeks ago and still didn’t get an answer. I am nervous:)

bump

I want to know about :
how is the camp life? how is the teachers or counselors? is the bed time strict?

@mathfan I have written extensively on these questions in the past so I recommend my thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1262763-semi-definitive-ross-updated.html which should answer most of your questions.

As to your specific questions I think camp life is pretty good. I’ve made a number of close friends there and I found the vast majority of people to be nice. I’m somewhat biased because I’ll be a counselor this year but I think the vast majority of counselors and teachers are pretty good. Out of more than twenty counselors in the past two years there is only one that could be considered bad. There is no bed time. Students can and do stay up until all hours of the night and nobody has any problems with it.

Thank you UMTYMP.
How is PROMYS about the laptop policy and bed time?
Thanks,

They’re pretty strict about the laptop policy actually. If you’re caught your laptop will be taken away till like the end of camp, and they try their best to make sure no one has one (of course, if you have a laptop and you don’t talk about it all the time, then you probably won’t be caught). I don’t think there is a bed time policy though. People are up /very/ late sometimes, usually to finish their problem sets (personally I find it’s easier to concentrate at night).

Thanks hawaii4lyfe.

This is such a good information. Thanks,

bump, who ad been accepted by PROMYS
