Will the requirements hinder doing a minor? How is IV? Is it hard to make friends living there? 0ther pros and cons? Any comments from current honors students would be appreciated! thanks!
Pros:
IV is an amazing building, you have your own dining hall and gym, courtyard in the earlier months, and amazing views
The Honors LLC is very tight knit, as is the program itself. You should have no trouble finding your place within it.
The requirements shouldn’t really hinder anything - you have the one-credit honors seminar, and the rest can even fit into a minor!
Cons:
The only real con is that IV is not around the other freshman dorms - that can create a bit of isolation between the Honors LLC and the rest of the school during your first year - that goes away entirely in year 2, and most people don’t find it to be a challenge. My only recommendation would be that if you have friends not in the honors LLC, go to their dorm when you hang out so you interact with other people than just honors students
@PengsPhils thank you!
I concur - there’s no reason not to do the honors program. If you really decide you don’t want to take the honors courses or seminar (which are actually pretty cool - I took History of Espionage), you can stop doing it and just not graduate with honors. The only real commitment is living in IV freshman year, which isn’t as isolated as some people seem to be afraid before starting. Besides the dorm, the best places to meet people are in classes and by joining clubs, so I’d recommend getting involved in as much as you can from the start, whether you’re in honors or not.
Be sure you want whatever extra requirements go along with the honors program. My son was at another college and absolutely despised most of the extra requirements. He was not looking to have an easy time in college, just more choices. The dorm situation was not as good as described for NU, which might have made him happier, but as far as academics and EC, did not excite my son.
