Pros/Cons of FT & of dorming in general

I'm having trouble deciding which residence hall to request and in what order. I'm not too familiar with the other ones.

I'm an incoming freshman and I'm looking to bring my car. I like FT because from what I know it's the only residence hall that there is no trouble getting a parking permit and park there.

But I am afraid that the distance from campus may be an issue. Thinking about it now, biking to campus every day sounds great, but what about when it's super hot? (I'm thinking you would just catch the bus?)

In terms of dorming in general, I'm not a big fan of living with other people, let alone sharing a bathroom with four people. Are there any people who had similar fears coming into this experience and how did you handle it?

And it terms of single dorms or university apartments, is it really that hard to socialize if you are not in a double or a dorm like FT? I mean, I'm social as it is and I'm sure I will be fine making friends in other environments. Anyone with the experience of living somewhat alone the first year?

Thanks :)

socializing here in FT is not a problem.
Your car won’t help you much when trying to get to class everyday, biking/busing is the way to go.
You can catch the bus every 15 minutes or so during “school hours”. Get a bus sticker and it’s free.
FT is kinda isolated from campus, you’ll get a nice pool (which is now under construction), a grass lawn with girls tanning all the time, a volleyball and semi basketball court.
You also get your own gym (but kinda small and nasty), and your own dinning common.
The foods here in FT is getting a little better, and usually it’s not as crowded as in campus.
Sharing the bathroom is not a problem usually. You can lock the other side when you’re in it. You can also put your stuffs in there most the time, and it’s not as bad as it sounds. It is still better than communal bathroom in my opinion.

The only, and I mean ONLY, complaint I’ve had about FT is the distance to and from campus. (You grudgingly get used to it, yes. lol)

Otherwise, I love everything else about FT: our own pool (that I never swam in lol) and most of the facts blastie mentioned.

But the one convenience I really love is the bathroom situation: you share a bathroom with only your roommate and suitemates (which there are two of them) instead of the whole floor. So there is no pee-on-toilet-seat issues or such.

Oh yea. And each room in FT has its own sink.

Does FT have good Internet access if it’s far from the main campus?

Yes. . .FT has its own wireless.

Wireless is (sometimes, VERY) speedy during the early morning and day. . .but gets congested towards times when people are settling their days down.

i recommend you get an ethernet cord – at least with ethernet, internet speed is consistent. . .and its less than $8 for a 25 foot long cord at amazon. lol

How is the wifi at UCSB in general?

Ha, I have suuuch a long Ethernet cable running from my computer to my room. Where would I plug it in there?
