Prospective Northeastern Sophomore Transfer

I’m currently attending Fordham Lincoln Center as an undergraduate Freshmen and I am planning on applying for transfer to Northeastern for the fall of 2019. I know Northeastern’s transfer rates vary heavily from year to year but I wanted to know any information that can assist in making a great application for my transfer. I already know about the 24 credit rule but I will have 18 college credits from my school plus 6 credits from AP scores. I had aproximately a 4.0 GPA in High School and currently have a 3.3 (which may go up as I’m only midway through my freshmen semester). Here is some questions I have:

  1. What does Northeastern look for in transfers? (IE: Extracurriculars, Grades)
  2. After research, I understand that different majors are harder to get into than others. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into the Pyschology Major program and which majors are easier to get into?
  3. My biggest worry is financial aid. I'm aware financial aid for transfer students are typically very low but I have come across a couple of students who got accepted as a transfer and recieved quite a large sum in finanical aid. What can I do to get better aid as a transfer student?
  4. I know Northeastern says that if you have more than 24 credits they wil not look at scores. Since I have 24 credits now and will have a prospective 40 by the time I apply, is it worth taking the SAT again? My SAT score was lower than the average for Northeastern and I'm worried they will not count the 6 credits from my AP, making my High School information subject to my application process.

I am also looking to transfer, keep in mind any credits you are working towards during the second semester will not count towards the amount you have when you send in your application. In regards to your AP scores they accept only 4s, and 5s.

I actually transferred to Northeastern after my freshman year. I am finishing up my first semester here as a sophomore and it was honestly a great decision. I’ll answer your questions and you can ask me more if you have any since I wish I had someone guiding me through this process.

  1. On my application I included the extracurriculars I did in highschool ( NHS, volunteering, Christian club, etc.) as well as the ones I did at my university which included being on the executive board of a cultural club and being a member of National Society of Black Engineers. They want to see that you are making the most of your college experience even though you are applying to transfer. In terms of grades, I transferred in with a 3.185 as a Computer Engineering major after my freshman year was completed. My former college is a top university for engineering that is known for rigorous workload so I think they took that into account. Northeastern is getting harder to get into every year so it’s really hard to tell what grades you need but make sure you’re on top of your game.

  2. I am not sure about your specific major since I transferred into the College of Engineering which isn’t easy to get into.

  3. For aid, I was pretty surprised at how generous they were with aid being a transfer and all. The University grant was very generous and on top of that I got the chance to apply for a College of Engineering transfer student scholarship making it basically a full ride with only one federal loan. I have a friend that also transferred with me at the same time and he was given basically a full ride from the grants he was given. One thing about the Northeastern grant is that you are guaranteed to receive the same amount every year as long as you keep in good academic standing and your financial situation doesn’t change drastically. I also got into Boston University as a transfer and they gave me significantly less money ( less than half the grant I got from Northeastern) so overall NEU is great with financial aid.

  4. My SAT is average with a 1290 and I submitted my AP scores for Calc AB and Physics C- Mechanics which I got a 5 and a 4 on respectively. I only had 23 credits when I applied but I do not think you should take the SAT again. It is a small part of the application and as you can see, I got in with my less than average score.

Let me know if you have any more questions and sorry if there are some errors/ grammar mistakes I have not read over this!
