Prospective Student on H4 visa

I am a prospective college freshman on the H4 visa. I know I am ineligible for FAFSA or any state-provided financial aid. I live in CA. My father earns ~$130k a year, but due to my medical condition (lots of medical bills) and other socioeconomic factors (high rent, costs, one parent working, etc) college tuition is a little tough.

I applied to UCs and CSUs. Cost is high, ~$30,000 without financial aid ineligible in-state students.

Was wondering if anyone could guide me as to whether there’s ANY way for me to get my fees cut down? Anyone suggest any scholarships, provide info on merit aid, etc.

Thanks!

Well…most of the larger merit scholarships had deadlines that have passed…

What is your SAT or ACT score…and your GPA?

how much CAN your parents give you annually towards college costs?

SAT: 1510
cumulative GPA unweighted: 3.81

parents can cover the cost but it’ll be a burden. I went thru hardship in 11th grade due to medical complications, and so my academic rigor is not high. (only 1 honors course in 10th- 11th grades, 3 AP/honors classes total in HS).

I just wanna know if there are any good scholarships I can apply for, especially for someone like me who doesn’t qualify for financial aid and has gone thru medical hardships to achieve educational goals.

@mom2collegekids

Is it too late for this kid to apply to one of the University of Alabama campuses??

I want to stay in-state or near a large city so that I’ll have access to medical facilities.

Alabama is out of the list…

99% will stay in-state bc CA has nice weather and numerous medical facilities in NorCal and SoCal.

How will you afford the college costs in CA?

They are not going to reduce the fees at the California publics. Try the private schools.

What is your major and career goal? Can you ever work in the US or will your visa not allow that?

Did you apply to any of the CSUs?

Do you get instate rates to the UCs and CSUs because you’re going to a Calif high school?

What are your stats?

New SAT score…1510…is that a superscore? Or a single sitting.

Look at some of the smaller privates like Whittier and U of Redlands. They’re generous with merit. I don’t know if they have a business major, so look. They may have Econ or something else that would work. Not sure that a “business major” has much value anyway as an undergrad. What is your future career goal?

You live in the Silicon Valley. Are you at all interested in a career there?

Didn’t your dad’s health insurance cover a lot of your medical bills?

On another note looking longer term, if you’ll turn 21 while still on H4 status, be sure to apply for a change of status to F1 well in advance so that your schooling is not interrupted.
