Prospective Student - Received Letter in the Mail *wondering if everyone received one*

Today I got a letter in the mail from UCLA along with a 2019 Viewbook. It’s titled, “Dear Prospective Bruin” and signed from the director of undergrad admissions, Gary A. Clark. I was wondering if everyone received this letter or something because my stats are definitely not this outstanding in order for UCLA to be recognizing me lol.

It sounds like marketing, and not even good marketing. There are colleges that will at least get the names of the kids they’re sending their mass mailings to, but maybe UCLA is too big to bother to do that.

it may be related to something you checked when you took the PSAT or SAT, such as minority status?

It does NOT mean you have any better shot than the tens of thousands of other kids they mailed to. SIgned by the Dean means nothing. Yes, many of us believe names are obtained from the PSAT- and regardless of scores. They have no view to your high school record.

You may even get this sort of thing from U Chicago, which is nototious for mass mailings.

As stated above, it is just Marketing. The more students that apply, the more application fees they collect and a lower acceptance rate can be achieved. If you are interested in applying and have the stats to be competitive, then well worth your time. UCLA should be considered a Reach school for all applicants but a few Reach schools on your college list cannot hurt.

D received something from U Chicago after she had applied (so the mailer hadn’t influence her in any way). Marketing, my friends. I wouldn’t read anything into the email from UCLA - they data scraped from somewhere.

Yes, my daughter received that same letter and Viewbook from UCLA in the past few days.

Everything the other posters said was correct.
