Protestantism and Catholicism

"Justify what happened in Africa and South America during the Age of Imperialism, and the role Christianity played."

Tell us what happened. Back it up.

I don't think there is necessarily a "better" religion. Both inherently believe the same thing. You really can't compare them. It is all a matter of what you believe, hence faith.

.-_-.

"when ever I tell a protestant that I’m catholic, I hate it when say "its ok were not all perfect" or another smug comment like that. Aw, it irks me so bad."

As a dedicated Catholic, you're simply going to have to get used to that attitude from a lot of Protestants -- the smaller and more radical the denomination (like Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-Day Adventists, fundamentalist strains within the Baptist Church, etc.), the higher degree of anti-Catholicism you will see. I've had Protestants tell me to my face that "Catholics aren't Christian."

On good days, I pray for them. On bad, I just tell them that they're heretics. Which, technically, they are. They are no different than the Gnostics, a popular heretical sect of the early days of Christianity. That their revisionist versions of Christianity exist and thrive is proof that Satan is alive and well and still trying to destroy the true faith.

well it's good to see that you're so much more tolerant and accepting than them, then.

Protestants are super anti-catholic, my best friend is protestant and I’ve been to their church where they have outright made fun of Catholics. You would NEVER find that in a catholic mass. No one would ever make fun of protestants at mass.

ps I didn’t know Gnostic was spelled with a G, you live and learn I guess.

It doesn't do to make sweeping generalizations, Angljc. That might've been one church, but you cannot say that all Protestants are "super anti-catholic" just from one experience.

^ (Angljc) sarcastic tone Yes, the ONE church you attended makes ALL Protestants anti-Catholic.

Two things

1.) Protestant by its very name and definition are "anti-catholic", that’s how the whole thing started. They protest Catholics. Know your history.

2.) That was not just from one experience that is taken from many. I was just told last night from the guy that worked at 7-11 told me "Its ok not everyone’s perfect" thing, I get thins like that all the time, mostly because their religion is based off thinking Catholicism is wrong.

"well it's good to see that you're so much more tolerant and accepting than them, then."

I accept and I tolerate their existence. Further, unlike so many of them toward me and my people, I willingly grant them the title of Christian. What I refuse to be, however, is a relativist when it comes to my faith in regards to other faiths. I didn't spend a year-and-a-half in RCIA classes and lose most of my friends in my journey toward the Catholic Church because I thought Protestantism was "just as good."

Things change. Attitudes aren't the same as they were hundreds of years ago. We went to war with England in 1775, but now they're our closest allies.

Fides: calling someone a heretic is being accepting and tolerant? I sure wouldn't want to be one of your friends.

Then why do I still feel the anti-catholic sentiment. At their core they are opposed to Catholicism, that is the reason why they were formed.

The England was not formed to oppose America.

I'm simply calling a spade a spade.

Angljc: but America as we know it was formed to oppose England, in the beginning.

And Fides: That would make you, what, a club? We're all still cards.

Angljc: Thanks for the history tip. It still doesn't mean that EVERY SINGLE LAST Protestant is anti-Catholic.

If that is true, why are there still Protestants that are dead set against Catholicism?

Something’s change and some do not as much as I wish it would.

Some people get stuck in the past. There are still southerners that hate people from the North and a ton of people in England dislike the French strongly.

Angljc1: Didn't you read my posts? Just because you've experienced anti-Catholic sentiments doesn't mean that ALL Protestants are anti-Catholic. I acknowledge the fact that some Protestants are still anti-Catholic. However, the people that YOU encounter doesn't reflect all Protestants. If a Protestant walks down the street and tells a Catholic, "I'm Protestant" and a Catholic says: "I feel sorry for you." Would you then conclude that ALL Catholics are anti-Protestant? I think not.

I love protestants though, but sometimes I don’t feel that back. To me they are just slightly misdirected; but still Christians. but that's just me.

I think we are generalizing a bit too much.

Now for the history: Protestantism orginally was too rid the Catholic Church of its corrupt nature, but they ended up creating a new religion because the Catholic Church wouldn't back down from its secular power...

Angljc1: You are now acting like your guy from 7-11. O.o The tables have turned!
