PSAT '09 Form W Thread

I still can’t believe there’s no solid consensus on these writing questions. I haven’t ever seen questions like these in the BB or on previous PSAT tests.

Somebody, please reassure me that the writing curve will be more lenient this year because I am effectively losing my sanity…

^ It WILL be more lenient; I’m pretty sure of that.

One of the answers to the sentence completions was “perfunctory,” correct?

^ Right.
10char

Well last year’s Writing curve was 80, 77, 73, 71…pretty harsh if you ask me, for middle of the road states ntl merit (such as mine-FL) you would have to get no more than 3 wrong…no more than 2 if you did bad on CR or M. Last year there were about 4 i wasnt sure about, but i actuallly ended up getting them all right for an 80 (unfortunately it doesnt count since i was a sophomore), so there are many who will still get perfect scores–but this year was definitely harder, though i think im at -2 only…
So this year would everyone guess maybe a 80, 78, 74/75, 73/72 curve?
And why is the Princeton Review Writing curve so ridiculously easy?: 80, 80, 78, 76?

fledgling: You seem to be very concerned about the PSAT as well. What state do you live in and what’s your cutoff?

I live in TX with a cutoff from 214-218 (usually just 215).

I live in Michigan (as my location states). Our cutoff is a 209… though I know for sure I qualified for National Merit, I set a personal goal of 223+ for myself, and I’m practically DYING here to know if I met it or not! lol

I’m probably being too hard on myself, but I might be applying to some Ivies my senior year and I don’t want to have to do a whole lot of prep before January…

I guess we’re all going to have to wait until December…

It will be a long wait.

I faintly remember one question on the math section that had a square of side length 10 and asked for the length of the diagonal.

I put 10squarerroot2. This just seemed too easy of a question, so can anyone confirm this?

what was the perfunctory problem

was perfunctory the one with the girl student who did her work well but never handed it in on time? if not then what was the answer to that one? Someone please respond

@ println: Yes, 10 sqrt (2) is right. There’s a large range among PSAT problems in terms of difficulty.

@ nmsfsat: The ‘perfunctory’ question was the one about the professor only making routine remarks on the girl’s work. The one about Caroline doing her work well but never handing it in was “diligent… punctual”.

I really need to stop reading this thread or I’ll never be able to wait until december… oh I really hope the writing curve is lenient…

are curves pre-determined? if they are determined after seeing how everyone does… then the writing curve may be more lenient right?

anyways, i think there’s only about 3 questions in debate here. are there usually 3 questions or so in debate?

oh yea, what about the trash one? “if people were to separate something from the…”

ive confirmed that one of the answers was in the center
and am now 95% sure that #34 was Came. The trails question.

18 the whether question was A.

I think I either put Explanation of for that question or maybe NE. I actually thought something was wrong mainly because of using the logic that since it was one of the last questions, something not so obvious was more than likely wrong.

18 the whether question was A.

What was #18?

Oh wait NVM. i know what you’re talking bout.

Can someone come up with actual concrete evidence to prove the answer to the last two writing questions? My answers and explanations are a few posts before this one.

IMO “came” is still technically correct and so is “suggest to build.”

Is it possible that the last one may be cancelled or even the “to build” one?

What do you guys think?

No. IT wont

Just because that question is debatable on this thread doesn’t mean that it’s debatable to CB. They probably have concrete evidence for picking answers. Plus, so many people asked that CB should also throw out the CR one (disdain/resentment). If it throws out those two questions you mentioned ^, plus the CR one, it would be absolutely ridiculous. Just because you find it debatable doesn’t actually mean it is.
