PSAT 2010 Saturday Critical Reading Discussion

Any thoughts on the CR section of the test?
Let's try to compile all the questions and answers.

i thought the last 2 vocab questions of section 1 was hard… one was about cubism vs. someone elses art, and the other one was about a critic who wasnt “carping”. do you remember the answer to these?

I said “cerebral” and “visceral” for the cubic painting one. Cerebral, or appealing to one’s knowledge or brain, is in stark contrast with visceral, or appealing to one’s emotions or gut feelings.

what about the question on the genetically modified plants that was like
the word “raised” mostly likely means…?

Raised = Broach
Did anyone get DIGRESS for an answer to an SC?

I didn’t get digress for anything . . . I think.

BTW, I think the answer for the hardest one was punctilious, but I chose indecorous so I was wrong. :(

does anyone remember that one question asking what was similar to the “irony” of something in a short passage? I think some of the answer choices were about a school teaching good manners, a sports team, and a corrupt politician?

I put school teaching

yea i put school teaching. i put raised=increased but i wasnt sure about that one… what was the other question asking what the word was similar to ? something about activist ___ through debates …i remember putting down “hunt”

yeah, I got like an 80 on the practice too, but I’m expecting like a 68. How much do you guys think I’ll get if I missed like 4 or 5 on CR?

the answer is broach–look up the definition online. It means “to bring up for the first time”

^^… through debates. i got stuck on that too.
persues…or runs?

before i answer some or your questions, are we allowed to talk about them now?

Hey, this is my first post here, haha. I was wondering, isn’t it against the rules for people to discuss the content of the PSATs? Could someone explain that to me?

IT IS NOT PUNCTILIOUS BUD, ITS INTUITIVE.

and I think not broach. IT Is definitely erect.

^ you’re wrong. erect means to like stand up or something. and it was punctilious.

The question was “He is not as _____ as some of his friends, he doesn’t act conventionally/is rude etc.” so the answer must be punctilious.

As for the “raise,” the answer is without doubt “broach.”
The sentence went something along the lines of “raise several important points.”

@Michies: Everyone’s taken the test by now.

@Koharvard: Someone’s bitter that he got two questions wrong.

Does anyone remember the sanguine…improve question verbatim? I know I probably got it wrong since everyone seems to have gotten that, but I remember getting something like optimistic…decline because she wanted the bad economic conditions to decline.

For the dual passages on GM crops, there was one question about the similarities of both authors. Was the answer “both state that activism has has an impact on the GM debate” or something along those lines?

Also, for the short reading on reality TV, would Author 2 respond to claims made by Author 1 (TV stars are laughed at or mocked or something) by refuting that only people who choose to be on TV are depicted by reality TV?

Thanks! Last thing: do you
know when we get our scores back?

Although Koharvard is wrong about the “erect/broach” question, he or she may be on to something about the “punctilious” question. I, too, remember seeing a “less” before the blank, which may have caused the answer to be the opposite of punctilious (perhaps the stronger indecorous)? It all depends on the wording of the question.
