PSAT 2011 Wednesday Answer Thread

flyinghigh - thanks. I remember the question…but somehow I don’t remember getting retraction/concession :-/ hope I didn’t do too poorly.

^^^^^^^“Had” was also in there.

for the parallelogram…could someone help me with that one? i remember exactly what i did…and i don’t know what was wrong with my process. my answer was 1632, which is wrong, so if someone could help me that would be great!

@AstroBlue: That’s EXACTLY what went through my mind. The sentence was like, "True somethingsomethingsomething, ALBEIT somethingsomethingsomething, they still blah blah blah. I took the clause with the “albeit” as a sense of retraction.

concession was the answer- look at the definition of it.

@ Diatomiclove: uhm…the first sentence was about how “i wanted to make clear the reason i ___ these objects. It not being because of their beauty” or something along the lines of that. ring a bell?

it seems everybody made silly mistakes on this psat, whether it may be in math or writing. does that mean the curve will be slightly more lenient or will the cutoff for the scholarship be lower?

@upenngirl727 No problem! I’m sure you did fine (:

@salamander2014 You had to find the height given the hypotenuse of the triangle that’s a part of the parallelogram which should’ve been 20. then time that by 68 which was the width. and yea.

I wasn’t sure about the cylinder one, but 35 pie doesn’t make sense to me. Can anyone explain?

hey for writing section, is it: “that do not…” or “that not to”? the word before the quotation is a verb. like: i recommend that do not over-study or i recommend that not to over-study?

@f1yin9hi9h see i did that and got 24 for the height…something crazy about 30-60-90 triangles. but thanks :)

That the thieves failed to sell all of the stolen artwork they had smuggled out of Sicily showed that the market for stolen antiquities has shrunk.
That the thieves failed to sell all of the stolen artwork showed that the black market has shrunk.
That the thieves failed to sell all of the stolen artwork shows that the black market has shrunk.

Which one is the original?

And what were the other answer choices for the concession one? im pretty sure i put concession but does anyone remember?

spkrap322; Oh yeah, I remember having a little trouble with that one. I think the answer was something like, “His point was not that he saw beauty/romanticism in an object.” That probably doesn’t help because I can’t remember exactly what it was haha sorry.

@Greenmamba20 They told you the lateral surface area of the cylinder was 70(pi).
The formula for lateral surface area is 2(pi)rh.
The formula for the volume is like (pi)r^2h.
so you know (2rh)=70.
since the other formula’s variables are just (r^2h)
you have to divide 70 by 2, the h’s cancel. and one of the r’s cancel, which leaves you with 35(pi)r

It was the first of those three sentences…i remember sicily explicitly

@Aj39vn23cf2 - The original one definitely had Sicily and it didn’t have the black market, it was some other market. That first one you posted is my best guess for tenses, but I’m not sure.

Aj39vn23cf2: THe first one, but with shows instead of showed

Thought that would get your attention lol

What was the one about Mo’s teaching?

It says arrogant in the OP but I thought it was pompous…

although i’m 99% sure it wasn’t showed…it was shows

^It was pompous, my bad.

That the thieves failed to sell all of the stolen artwork they had smuggled out of Sicily shows that the market for stolen antiquities has shrunk.

^So this is the EXACT sentence?
