PSAT Cutoff Scores for 2008 National Merit Semifinalists (H.S. '09)

Nashman, if your son scored a 216, how do you know the cutoff is 215?

I qualified in AZ with a 219. My friend qualified with a 215.

So AZ is <= 215

Summarizing:

AZ <= 215 (post 22)
CA <= 219 (post 19)
OH <= 215 (other thread)
TN <= 216 (other thread)
TX <= 218 (other thread)

My daughter made semifinalist with a 218 in CA.

^ When? Cutoffs change year by year.

her daughter seems to be a rising senior, according to a quick glance of her posts…

the cutoffs are 2008 competition for '09 graduates

I qualified with 211 from FL…sooo lucky

My actual PSAT packet said 210 last year, but I guess there was one controversial question. Anyways, my NMSF packet says 211. yay

Did I understand that your official score report from last December that you had a 210 but when you received you NMSF packet today it showed you with a 211??

I remember that on the Saturday test there was a writing question that they decided not to score…
maybe that is the controversial one?

Do all packets come at one time or is it by region?

Yeah, I did take the test on a Saturday and I’m guessing they decided not to score that Q because it was controversial?..I’m not positive but I guess that somehow caused the score increase.

The packets normally send to the schools and each school will decide when to give it to the students.

They were purportedly all mailed out a few days ago (from the Chicago area).

My dd’s packet said not to discuss with anyone other than their family (and their principal) until the official release date of 9/10. Ooops! Many at her school figured out why those particular students had been called to the office. The paperwork is due to her principal by 9/12 and the school has to mail it by 10/10. It also states that, of the 15,000 SF who advance to Finalist, only 2,500 win NM-sponsored awards, 1,100 win corporate-sponsored awards and 4,600 win college-sponsored awards (which are not transferable to other schools). Total of 8200 awards so just a little over half get any $$$.

It’s likely less than half since some abandon their small NMF award and attend a school of their dreams (Harvard for example) without the NMF money.

But it’s really about the honor, not the money, IMHO.

You are so right! In past years, I know how impressed I was by other students who had received this distinction and really just can’t believe, amongst her other incredible traits, that she will receive the attention she so deserves for the academic ability she tends to downplay. I imagine she was the biggest surprise at her school!

Oh, so we get them through the school? Great. I was a little worried, but since I’m not in school yet, I’m probably okay. Think 3 points above last year’s cutoff will do it for me?

I hope I get mine next week. Last year I remember a group of students being called to the office and everyone knew why because of who those people were. They officially announced the semifinalists several days later, I think.

My score is 28 points above last year’s cut-off in my state, so I’m not worried about myself, but I’m anxious for some of the people closer to the cut-off. I know someone with the exact score as last year’s cut-off.

Congratulations to your daughter, ddd928!

DD made Semi-Finalist in Illinois with 215.

220 in IL…
