Selection index of 217! Kind of scary as the predicted cut off for my state is 217. Anyone have a good website that predicts what future selection index’s will be?
Also two questions on my math section were deemed “unscorable”. Any way I can pay college board for a verification or to hand grade it? - as they do with AP exam multiple choice.
@ZealousScholar Those two questions were unscored for everyone since they didn’t “perform as intended.”
What is the value of the PSAT for 10th graders? Is it merely for planning and test prep purposes? Setting expectations? I am not sure why my son’s school made him take this test. He got a 590 verbal, 710 math (97th percentile). Is this considered to be good but not good enough for national merit scholarships?
10th grade PSAT scores. My son just sent me his score report of 1290, 640 verbal and 650 math. He did not prep. I know he plans to prep for either SAT or ACT which he hopes to take fall of junior year. Based on his score do you think he should try a sample ACT or just stick with SAT. He is legacy at a non HYP Ivy and highly selective small liberal arts college, he is interested in both.
@TP2000 Thank you for answering that question about the “unscored” questions. I had considered calling College Board to inquire for my DS today, but you saved me the trouble!
@ZealousScholar Yes, the website http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/national-merit-semifinalist-cutoffs/ has an accurate cutoff prediction. I’m in the same boat, at 218 in Pennsylvania, which is right on the cut off.
I got a 215, a 1440, in Missouri. Do you think that will qualify? Thanks!
@AverageTeen2000 The predicted range for Missouri is 214-218, and the previous cutoff last year was 216. Great job! But I would remain cautiously optimistic.
when do the selection index cutoffs get published?
What is the best way to prepare for the reading section of the PSAT? I took the test this year as a sophomore and got 760 math, 650 reading, but have a hard time with reading comprehension (it just seems that all of the question that they ask us about passages are things that we do not learn in English class). Are there any good review books for the PSAT or should I just study for the SAT now and hope that I will be smarter come next October?
@kimclan1 Reading was the least thing that I studied for and ending up going from constant 700s to a 760 simply by studying the type of question that the passage is asking and what they are looking for in those questions (google how to get an 800 on SAT reading). I would make sure to know the common vocabulary that you’ll see in the questions and try to work on speed. Try to finish each section in 11 minutes, that way you can have extra time in your back pocket. For methods I like reading the questions first so that I know what I am looking for in the passage, and then reading the passage (stopping whenever I have marked something for where its corresponding question is, like for example question X will ask for the definition of the word in line 11, mark that word in line 11 and stop when you get there) and then going and answering the question. I also think its important to have it engraved into your brain that there really is only one correct answer, or maybe that was just a personal issue. Too often you’ll end up thinking that either of two answers could really work, but there really is just one right answer and there is a specific reason for that. Other than that, just try to act like your intensely reading into the passage for pleasure and that you are really interested in what it is saying. If your looking for a studying source there are SAT prepbooks that you can buy and Khan Academy is also a great free resource to use.
Also, for anyone who has gotten back their scores and are not pleased with the results know that you can change those, its up to you. It’ll just take a lot of hard work. 200 or 300 points improvements are possible.
@kimclan1
What @IN4655 did with reading, I did with writing. I went from missing 10-15 questions per section to a perfect on this PSAT. Studying is always helpful if done the right way. Scour this website, research online, ask experienced adults or successful students on how to study in the best way.
@ZealousScholar Congrats man! I actually went from repeated 640’s on Writing to 800 on Writing too. If there is one section that can be made into all but a systematic process, it is definitely writing.
Perfect score on math, -8 on reading, -6 on writing (PSAT 10)
760M, 670 CR/W
210 NMSC index
but im from texas so thats nowhere near qualifying for semi-finalist…
gotta raise my CR/W score to like 730
