Madi…

Take the ACT…you may do better on that. But, do also take the SAT, you may do much better than you did on the PSAT. Get some practice books!!!

What are your education plans?

238 from MI. @tennisplayaar, good job!

madi,
Don’t be discouraged, things don’t always work out the way you’d like the first time. It is true that the SAT (and unfortunately, the PSAT) aren’t very popular in a lot of school districts. I spoke with students at some schools in a part of the state I was traveling for work last year that hadn’t heard of the PSAT. I was surprised by that and made a point to ask the counselor about how the school helps prepare students for the PSAT and SAT.

I guess I was lucky in that my high school (this is several years back mind you) placed quite a bit of focus on the PSAT throughout their pre-AP and AP classes and offered quite a bit of guidance on the ACT v. SAT v. both decisions for us. I guess at the time I naively assumed most of the AR high schools had similar emphasis.

Keep your chin up, and just be sure you prepare well for the ACT/SAT (or both) when the time comes.

Is it possible that Texas makes a 6 point Drop?
I got a 209…

Seeing all of your scores, I take it that I should just hold my 191 and weep? (From FL)

Will, it is highly unlikely, but still possible. In my state (RI) it went from 217 for the class of 2010 to 211 for the class of 2011. Then again, 217 was abnormally high for us.

SeekingUni, you shouldn’t weep. 191 is still pretty good. It’s just not good enough to be NMSF.

My daughter got a 213 in Florida! We are excited!

So, what are the chances that she will become a finalist? She is 7th in her class out of 700, no disciplinary problems, and we are always on top of deadlines.

Florida’s cutoff score was 211 last year, so your D has a very good chance of making semi-finalist. If she makes NMSF, it’s very likely she’ll make finalist because those who don’t typically cause the problem.

204 as a sophomore this year in IL, but I didn’t study for it. Hopefully next year I can be better prepared and bring it up more!

219.

NJ cutoff has been 221. I’m one question short.

I’m still heartbroken.

I think you are more than “one question short”. You are short on respect, civility and sensitivity. Admiring another poster’s anti-Semitic comment tells me a lot more about you than your PSAT score. You are deficient on many counts.

To what “anti-Semitic comment” are you referring?

The mods deleted the comment made by another poster (on a chance thread) and tenor’s response that the slur was funny.

My daughter received a 232 in NY we are very excited. Does anyone know when we find out if she is a semifinalist? What type of grades and SAT score do you need to become a finalist? Is there an interview or essay required?

Congrats.

You’ll be notified in late Aug thru mid Sept (some schools wait until Sept to tell their students).

As long as your child has a good SAT score (anything over 2000 is very safe), and a good GPA (no D’s and maybe only one C), and is not a discipline problem at school, she’ll be fine. GPA should be in the 3.5+ range…and show academic consistency (the no bad grades issue)

Your D will need to send her SAT scores to NMCorporation code 0085

NO interviews.

Your school will give your D the NMSF packet in the Fall. She will fill it out, write the required essay (easy), and then return the packet to her school for them to complete and submit.

First, congrats on the 232. Second, she will learn if she is a semifinalist in September. To become a finalist, she should look for a 2000 or better on her SAT (this year’s cutoff was 1960). As for grades, the higher the GPA, the better. There really is no set GPA, because all schools figure GPAs differently. No interview, but an essay is required.

Quick question. My son scorred a 227 on the PSAT and he is about to take the SAT test in March. Since I am pretty sure he will make semi finalist do I have him put the code 0085 on the sat test so it get reported? Or do I need to wait till he gets the letter to confirm?

I would recommend him not to put the NMSC in the SAT test sheet because if for some reason he does not do well on SAT test and get a low score, you do not want to send it to the NMSC. He always can retake the SAT test as many times as he wants until he get a good score then send it to the NMSC.

I sent my January test scores. I only plan on taking the SAT just this one sitting. Yes, it is safer to wait, but then it will cost money to send later.
