PSAT preparation

I took the PSAT as a sophomore with hardly any prep and I got a 193 on it. I would like to adequately prepare for it this time, and I was wondering what material I should use. I'm planning on buying the blue book from CB, and I have the 2007 Princeton review SAT book, but I'm not sure where else to being my search for material.

Are SAT review books just as effective for the psat, or should I concentrate on books that are exclusively for the psat? Also, I know they were selling past PSAT exams on CB, so would it be helpful to purchase those and do them? I don't know if they give the answer key as well though, so I really have no idea where to start.

Actually, I'd like to know the same things. 10th grade PSAT scores are similiar and considering taking SAT in Nov or Dec.

i really don't see the point of buying books specifically for the PSAT, since it's pretty much the same thing as the SAT (same questions, only slightly different format and shorter). besides, you can use the SAT books when you take the real SAT (which actually counts) as well. although all you're basically doing is taking practice tests. i personally wouldn't buy anything from CB bc i give them enough money as it is, but it is helpful to take practice PSAT tests if you're really going to prepare... you can just go to a bookstore and take one there. no use spending money on something that doesn't really even matter.

as far as sat prep books the official college board one and princeton review are both pretty good. just take as many practice tests as you can.

Yeah i say prep for the SAT...just w/out the essay...you'll do better on the PSAT as well if you improve on SAT stuff lol...plus all you really need to get on the PSAT is above NMSF cutoff and that's like in the 210's-220's so no need to specifically prep for the PSAT

The only preparation I did for the PSAT was to glance over the practice test, which I believe all schools are required to hand out, during the commute to school and I got a score of 224. It's really not worth preparing for, as the only thing that one can possibly get out of it is National Merit commendation/finalist status, which is simply another thing to add to the college applications. The PSAT is not bad at all and is far less strenuous than the SAT largely due to the time difference.

^Actually, the PSAT is extremely important specifically because of NMS. Even though finalist status doesn't come out in time for early apps (can't remember whether it's out for regular apps - I didn't bother putting it on any of mine), the potential scholarship money is a worthy benefit, considering what the top schools are asking for these years. :|

cutoff varies by state
