I got a 217 index

80M
76W
61CR (lol, i know)

But to all of those who are sophomores and freshman who did poorly... I got a 176 index last year, so that means I increased my score by 41 points. Yes, that's FOURTY ONE. Believe it. So... don't stress out if you didn't do as well as you would have liked, there's always next year.

192 index

74 M
65 W
53 CR (ouch)

Oh well, at least I have another year before it counts. I large improvement in critical reading is necessary for junior year.

There is no separate cutoff for boarding schools!

For the umpteenth time - it is a NATIONAL cutoff for commended. Last year, the cutoff was 202. It is a STATE cutoff for semifinalist - see previous posts for last year's state by state cutoffs.

At this point, you can guess if you are likely to be commended or semi, but you won't know until next year.

So I got my score of 218 today.
Pretty happy, I made so many careless mistakes though, frustrating..

My question is whether or not I will make semi finalist.
I live in Florida and last year the cut off was 215. Do you think the cutoff will reach 219 this year?

OMG i got a 215 but the semifinalist cutoff for california has been 216 for the past 2 years! i really hope it drops to 215 this year =( what are the chances?

fireflyscout,

my daughter attends boarding high school in the Midwest and there is a separate cutoff for boarding school students. The region her school is in includes boarding school students from Illinois, Indiana, and I believe Ohio, Michigan, and other surrounding states. I have read in this thread that there is also a Northeastern region, a Mid Atlantic region, and a Southern region. I can only speak to her region. Last year the cutoff for her region was 219, with 7 or 9 students total selected (can't remember which number) due to the limited population in her pool. She is a junior this year and just found out her score: 217. If she lived here at home (South Carolina) she would have made the cutoff, but unfortunately for her, because she moved to boarding school this year, I think she missed being named a NMSF....

Dixie,

Do you know where these cutoffs are posted? I've seen the state-by-state cutoffs but I've never seen those that apply to boarding school students.

It sucks to miss commended or national merit semifinalist by one point.

@Dixie I have no clue where you heard that information but it definetly is wrong...here is a quote directly from the national merit site...

"Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year"

and for semifinalist
"In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically able young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state."

My scores exceeded my expectations:

67 - Math
68 - Critical Reading
74 - Writing
Total: 209
98 percentile

Pretty good considering that sophomore year it was

54 - Critical Reading
58 - Math
59 - Writing
171 total
79 percentile

I read a lot more during the year and took maybe 5 practice tests over the summer. I have yet to start studying hard core.

72 CR
67 M
71 W
= 210

16 pt increase since freshman yr, 19 pts since sophmore yr. decent increase considering i did zero prep work for it at all

Regarding a separate boarding school cutoff, the source of my information is the college admissions counselor at my daughter's boarding school, as well as evidenced by the students this year who did not get national merit semifinalist because their score was below 219.

Her school has students from many states and countries. If they did use the Indiana cutoff, then students from other states and countries might benefit, especially those who enrolled this year at the beginning of the junior year, just in time for the PSAT. My guess is (and this is only speculation) that there isn't a good way to determine which state cutoff to use for schools like this, so they decided to treat them as a separate population and establish a separate cutoff.

If anybody KNOWS that this isn't true, I'd love to hear it, and I will challenge the counselor at her school. The National Merit site gives an overview of the selection process, but I think there are many "specifics" that they do not address on their site. So I feel more confident trusting people's actual experiences before trusting an overview on the National Merit site. I'm certain there are parents from Andover, Exeter, Deerpark, etc. reading this site. What experiences have you encountered with your kids at their own respective boarding school?

Finally! My lovely GC snuck me my score after school. :)

80- CR (Yeah!)
75- W (Yeah!)
69- M (Merm.)

Now, if only I was a Junior, I would be a NMSF. I suppose there is always next year...

Geez, who studies for the PSATs? Let alone the SAT. You guys worry a lot.

Delicatess, studying for the PSAT is precisely why my score increased by 18 points.

My score sophomore year was third in my class. My score this year is first. My score changed by 18 points whereas their scores only changed by one or two.

The PSAT has been three parts for quite some time.

California, 99%. "Unofficially" got scores today.

CR: 78
Math: 80
Writing: 71. Arg.
Total: 229

I'm interested in what the cutoff for FINALISTS are... are they only people who score 235 and above?
