Cipher: I don't think there's a further cut off for finalist. The great majority of semifinalists become finalists: all that's required is completing an application and essay, taking the SAT and scoring in the same range as the PSAT, and being recommended by your school.

My score sophomore year was third in my class. My score this year is first. My score changed by 18 points whereas their scores only changed by one or two.

The PSAT has been three parts for quite some time.
Well, good job, but point taken that you guys worry too much.

Personally I think studying for the SAT should be banned, damn it. Or else it just tests you on how to take the test, not on innate ability.

Edit: I remember now. hahaha When I took the PSAT 4 years ago there was also a writing section. Meh...this goes to show how trivial it is and how much it's not worth worrying over.

Am I the only person who still hasn't recieved their scores? I was in the guidance office and they were in a pile and the secretary wouldn't let me see mine. Our assembly to get them back was pushed back because of a snow day and the guidance department is too lazy to reschedule it (or at least it seems that way).

Nah. My son's school still hasn't released his. The will probably do it on the last day before break.

My DS school will release scores January 10th and 11th at an assembly. It seems silly to pull the sophs and juniors out of class to deliver the scores - but, that's the way it is...

I have googled, checked the NMSQT website, checked the websites of many boarding schools, posted the question on other forums on this site, and there is not the slightest mention of a separate cutoff for boarding schools. If there was such a thing, why wouldn't it extend to private day schools? The only uncertainty I have is which state cutoff applies to boarding school students - the state of the school or the state of home residence. I'm not saying there might not be a boarding school cutoff, but why wouldn't it be published somewhere when the state information is available?

ETA: Check the Parents Forum - "Boarding School Question" thread. A boarding school parent has responded that the state cutoff which applies it the state of the school.

anxiousmom -- Wow. That is making the test seem faaaar more important than it actually is. No wonder kids (and parents) find it so easy to stress and lose perspective over what is, except for the possibility of some money for the top 1%, nothing more than a practice test.

I stand corrected - a parent has provided information on the Parents Forum thread which supports the boarding school cutoff (when a "substantial" number of students are from out-of-state).

Thanks fireflyscout for posting your question and finding this answer. If it helps the dialogue, my daughter's school has over 750 students, with only 230 from the home state, and over 100 students from other countries. So I guess that would qualify as a sizable population from out of state.

She probably won't make the boarding school cutoff, but she is still a fantastic student in my eyes! She raised her critical reading score 12 points, her math score 3 points, but unfortunately her writing score fell 10 points (wednesday's test - i guess it was tougher for her than last year). Hopefully, this will have little impact on her securing admission to the school of her choice, and (hopefully) some type of merit aid. Congrats to all of those who did make their respective cutoffs!

Yea I got my PSAT scores (Wednesday test) last week from my school.
Got a 221, 99th percentile. I'm crossing my fingers that the cut off for NJ wont change (it was exactly 221 last year)

80 CR, 0 wrong
74 M, 2 wrong
67 W, 6 wrong, 1 omit

Much improved from last year, when I got a 186 or something- so sophmores dont freak out if you dont score as high as you wanted. The CR was the most suprising for me since I do really spend too much time reading or memorizing vocab, but I was real interested in the passages and got a little lucky on the sentence completions.

EDIT: holy crap, kyk I got the exact same subscores as you!

what is the cutoff for ny? i heard it was 215... in any case, i got a 224, so id be ok

omg i got a 172 =/

Umm.. Guys, Don't get too bend on your PSAT scores. I know kids who got a 170 and wound up with a 2350 on the real SAT...

Unfortunately, I also know kids who got a 235 and ended up with a 1700...

Uhm... in that case, you know something is wrong. For example, most of the sophomore at my school took the PSAT for fun and didn't really put forth their best effort had they if they had known it was a ''big thing''. So to put it, somebody getting a 155 soph year and 220 junior year just shows that that person was apathetic taking it as a soph.

I got a 232, but I don't qualify for NMS because I'm not a US citizen. :(

you dont have to be a US citizen to qualify.

Yes you do. You have to be either a US citizen or proof that you will be one.

ok, so I understand that 202 was the cutoff for being commended last year, but wat was the percentile?
I got a 201/96percentile on my psats so im really curious about this.

you wont get commended with a 201, the cutoff will at least be 202, it doenst matter what percentile you are. It will most likely be 203 this year

o..., how do u know for sure it'll be at least a 202?..
