PSAT results

So I’m a sophomore, and I did pretty bad on my PSAT (1220. 610 math and 610 reading). When I took the test I had only taken algebra 1 so far. Is it possible for me to get a 33/34 ACT next year? I really want to apply to bs/md programs.
Edit: Also I was late to the test because my counselor never told me what time it was. I also did not do any prep because I did not know I was taking it till the afternoon before.

1220 isn’t a bad score for a sophomore.

Your main problem was that you had only taken Algebra 1 before taking the test - the PSAT covers algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2, so it makes sense that you got some of the math wrong (because you hadn’t even learned it yet!). By simply learning the required math, your score will go up. As for the ACT - assuming that you’re in geometry right now, you should be OK taking the ACT next year with half a year of algebra 2 under your belt. I got a 34 on the math section of the ACT with half a year of algebra 2, although I obviously can’t speak for everyone.

Overall - if you do a lot of prep work (and you’re currently in geometry - otherwise you’ll need to study Alg 2 entirely on your own), yes, it is possible for you to get a 33-34 on the ACT next year. It’s a predictable test, so buy a prep book and study every single concept that you know will appear on the exam (specifically math concepts and grammar rules) until you know it inside and out and can apply it. Take practice tests until you’re comfortable finishing well within the time limit without sacrificing accuracy on stupid mistakes. If you’re not the best at reading comprehension, spend extra time practicing the Science section; it doesn’t actually test you on your knowledge of science, it’s just the Reading section but with much more dense passages.

And definitely make sure to show up on time to the test.
