PSAT Scores: These are in the basement -- what do I do to improve?

Total score, as a sophomore, without any clue whatsoever in advance about the test:

M: 77%ile -- 52
R: 69%ile -- 48
W: 54%ile -- 42

TOTAL: 142

How much can these expect to improve over time for PSATs (next year) or the SATs (the next couple of years)?

I suggest you begin studying for the SAT instead of the PSAT. The SAT will matter more in the future and if you start studying now, you can easily do much better.

Honestly, I hated the PSAT. I know it can help with scholarships but I thought it was a waste of time. I did almost as badly as you (~165ish sophmore year and 153 junior ;/) but I just took the Jan SAT and I'm pretty sure I did wayyy better than my PSAT, atleast a 1700.. just start studying for the SAT, get specialized books (I got the PR math workout since I'm horrid at math..)

dude dont worry. from my psat- im up at least 150 in every category and up over 250 in the writing
