PSAT Sophomore Year

Hi all!

I'm going to take the SAT this year as a sophomore, and I'm wondering how the PSAT will work. Usually, one takes the PSAT before the SAT, but I'm taking the SAT on the October 9th test date, but the 2010 PSAT are on October 13th and 16th.

That being said, I have a few questions:

Does it matter that I'm taking the PSAT before the SAT? I feel that it's somewhat awkward to be taking the SAT before the "preliminary" SAT (even though I've heard that--correct me if I'm wrong--the PSAT is nothing like the SAT).

Do my PSAT scores not get counted if I take it my sophomore year? I obviously want to take the PSAT for the scholarships and the like, and I want to know if my scores will actually count. Do I have to wait until my junior year to take the PSAT?

I'm reasonably intelligent--or so I like to think--but I know very little about the academic process (e.g. about college apps, choosing colleges, how tests/extracurriculars/clubs work, etc.), so any and all advice is appreciated; criticism for blatant ignorance is also accepted :P

Have you taken practice tests for the SAT yet?

The PSAT is basically the SAT, except it only has 5 sections, and no essay section. No, it does not count for sopohomore year.

As do all of us here on CC  jk. You can improve your SAT score if you don’t like it, and by yourself!

You can take the PSAT during freshman and sophomore years (I did). However, only your junior year score counts towards the scholarships.

And it’s perfectly fine to take the SAT before the PSAT. Many of my friends did that last year and more of them are doing the same this year. The question types on the PSAT are exactly like those on the SAT. In reality, the PSAT is just a shorter, essay-free SAT.

dont take it sophomore year… if you are asking such a question you should not. take the psat alone. wait till junior year for the sat, taking it now counts as a try, the more trys the worse it is. Just get a good score junior year first time and you should be good to go.
