PSAT vs. SAT

Because of a lack of psat books, I've been studying for the psat from sat books and doing sat practice tests. i do relatively well on them. my range for each section is usually 740-800 (74-80 for psat). today I did the official psat practice test in the booklet my school gave me and (except for the writing section) my scores were horrible. 66 for cr. 68 for math (and math is my best subject...) 71 for writing. those scores are nowhere close to any of the cutoff scores for national merit semifinalist. and im from nyc where the cutoff is a bit higher. i'm really freaked out and am wondering if that official psat practice test was just a bad one for me or am i gonna FAIL the psat???

HELPPP!! sorry for this major freakout. i thought i was thoroughly prepared for the psat and now... i'm not. =(

what sat books did you use? because i know princeton review is definitely easier than some psat books out there (like barron's) .. i think kaplan is a little easier than the actual sat as well.

i used kaplan and princeton review and barrons. but i took all my practice sat tests on the official book. my psat practice one (the one im mentioning here) is also from the official booklet. so everythings official... but there was such a huge discrepancy between my sat score and my psat one

Maybe it was just a bad day? You should take the same test again. Just to see if you improve. It's what I did.

maybe you were thinking it'd be easier than the sat and inadvertently made simple mistakes? sometimes after taking hard exams when you go take an easier one, you choose answers that involve a little too much thought and detail and not the straightforward, textual answers that the psat is looking for.
