PSAT: Will I still get scholarship money if I have a low GPA?

Hey guys,

I'm a junior and I took a practice PSAT test (PPSAT?) and scored a 210. I'm determined to get a score like that on the real test. I'm signing up next week.

The problem is that I have a low GPA -- 3.0. Could I still get scholarship money or would it be pointless taking the test?

Hard to say. A pure test score will earn you NFSF status, and some schools award money to NMSF, but there might be a minimum GPA requirement attached by the school. Anyway run not walk to the PSAT scholarship thread. Bob Wallace outlines which schools give what to whom. GL.

How many C+ or below do you have? It you have none, you may still have a chance.

When my son was going through the process last year, I was told by admissions people at two different schools who are knowledgeable about the NM process that NMSC is looking for a 3.5 or higher. Based on last year’s results, it’s safe to say that they are also looking for no more than one C.

^ You are right. I read somewhere about the 3.5 minimum in GPA too.

It’s never pointless to take the test. You could still get NMSF status, and some schools do give awards for that.

Even if you make semifinalist, you will not make finalist with a 3.0.
However, you may be able to get other scholarships based on high SAT scores (or ACT), or semifinalist standing. So don’t stop prepping!
