I know about SAT and ACt scores, but what about PSAT? What is a great, good, average, low, etc. PSAT score?

Also, does the PSAT really matter? How does it count in any way besides getting scholarships or something? it isn't on your transcript unless you want, right?

Oh, and is the PSAT hard? Harder than the SAT?

What is the scale like. I see numbers like 200 and in the 100's....

PSAT is out of 240 and is a lot like the SAT but does not include an essay. Scores are hard to define because somebody's great score might be average or low to another person. Personally, I'd say National Merit Finalist scores are great (220ish), ~210 is good, and ~190 is average. I thought the PSAT was pretty easy and better then the SAT because it's shorter:) However, I haven't seen my scores yet so I don't really know how I did. I think scores come out sometime in December.

PSAT only matters in that it determines what level of national merit scholarships you will fall. If your scores qualify for national merit recognition, that's a big bonus towards college admissions, however, colleges do not see your PSAT score, so if you perform poorly, it doesn't hurt you.

I would still take it seriously b/c it will familiarize you with what kinds of things you need to study and how the test is in general.

I have heard through CC word of mouth that scores as low as 180 have potential to qualify in some way for the program.

by the way, 146 is the average. If 190 is the average, 92% of juniors are scoring below par. j/k- but in observation of CC standards, I guess commended scores are what would be considered "good".

Wow, I must have been on CC too much! I don't like too discuss my scores with my friends so I must have a really skewed interpretation of average from CC. That's good to know that 146 is average. It makes me feel better about my score :)

Also, I think that 180 probably is good enough for the national hispanic cutoff.

I just took the SAT but feel that I did better than what my PSAT suggested. If I went up 300 SAT points from my PSAT that would be so sweet: 2410 haha.

I got a 230 on my psats and moved on to national merit semifinalist, but i only got 2250 on my SATs, so I think they're def. easier than the real thing, but that's just me :(

I know someone who got a 203 on the PSAT three years ago, and was a commended scholar. I think its not only based on your score, but on your score relative to the other students who took the exams. I think the highest scoring 50,000 (or 100,00, I'm not sure) students move to commended scholar status. It may also depend on what state you live in, and how you score relative to the other students who live in your state.

I am beginning to doubt that national merit is based on the 4% commended/1.6% semi-finalist proportion, but rather on the fixed numbers, which are approximately 50K and 16K, respectively. Since the tested population is growing larger by the year, cutoffs have been rising for each test. I believe the commended cutoff was 199 some time ago, but rose to 200 for '04, 201 for '05, 202 for '06, and will likely be 203-204 for '07, unfortunately.
