A couple days ago i met up with one of my friends who, just like me, took the psat last year. I told him that i got a 76 on the math section, and he said he got a 77. I only missed one free response question(i left it blank), and he answered one multiple choice question incorrectly. Has this happened before? Or do they have some new sort of grading system?

I think that there is negative scoring for the multple choice questions but not for the grid-ins, which would account for the difference in score

Yes. You do lose 1/4 of a point for every incorrect MC answer.

You guys are right, but if CRbomber left a free response blank and his FRIEND got a MC question wrong, shouldn't the friend get the lower score?

Exactly, and the only reason i worry is because the National merit semifinalist cutoff may be only one point higher than what i got, a 219. I live in texas, and last year i think the cutoff was like 216.

The TX cutoff has consistantly been around 216 for the last few years, and I doubt it will increase by so much in one year

I just hope this won't happen on the SAT, which i will be taking in april.

The cuttoff will fluctuate +/-1 point at most. But it is really rare. I think you are safe. Good Job!

thanks lil_killer

Your scores should have been identical. But one wrong, regardless of whether its MC or free response, on the PSAT is indeed a 77, I have a friend who got that.

I am worried that if I complain over one point, complications will occur with the collegeboard, and they may want to reevaluate all my scores or something... :/

Don't worry about it. They probably won't find anything wrong and will give you the extra point.
