PSU Class of 2018 Admission Decision Thread

@momofboys727 it’s not always about the GPA and SAT. Penn states takes into consideration a lot of other stuff including EC, and class rank.

He is in the top 10%. President of his senior class, President of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. President of the Quiz Team. Homecoming King. He is involved in baseball, wrestling and football. He is a two year captain of the football team where he earned local and regional MVP awards. I feel like a sore loser.

@momsofboys727 oh wow! Did a lot. My mom would have sure loved if I did all that

Hi I applied for Penn State on november 17th and am still waiting to hear the results. I applied for upark and altoona as 2nd. I still didn’t get my results back so I am pretty worried…I check every night at 12.00 to see if they updated x.x

My SAT was 1940 single score
SATII: chem 620 world 620 math 2 630
ACT 29
GPA 3.75…i think weighted…idk…
I received 4’s on all the pas i took so far: ap world his, ap chem, ap eng and i am now taking ap stat, ap ab calc and ap bio
I received many awards from science competitions
I took 2 college now courses and got 4.0 and 2.7
I am from new york city, indian female.
I worked in a chemistry lab for 2 years and did research on a photo trigger to treat cancer more effectively
I have 4 jobs currently
Income: 20,000 -
The major I am aiming for is chemical engineering.

I really want to get into penn state. I loved the presentation they had at the Marriott hotel in NYC. its amazing for research!

@momofboys727 ~ that really doesn’t make sense. Your son looks like a great candidate for PSU. I know admissions take other things in consideration, but he really seems to have a lot going for him. Maybe the College of “whatever” was full? Have you considered calling since he did get into a branch campus… Maybe they can tell you what it is?

We thought so, too. He applied to Smeal. I understand it’s very competitive.

My D applied to UP and also check marked summer. Today her status page pic changed to Hazelton Campus ( her alternate choice). Does it mean she was not considered for even summer start at UP ? Any chance if she calls UP tomorrow and asks for summer start there ? Anyone got in summer start at UP even after pic changed to alternate campus ?

@plumstead did her status change to coming days today? And did the picture change the same time

Well as I suspected I’ve been accepted into my alternate. The picture changed with the “coming days” status on Friday and sure enough, I just got the acceptance tonight. So in my case the picture change was accurate, if that helps anyone. My stats for anyone interested:
4.0 GPA u/w
1760 SAT
Dual enrollment (9 college credits)
8 Honors classes
Tons and tons of EC’s, community service, rotary, sports, music, 4 year language, etc.
Excellent letters of Rec.

Aside from maybe my SAT I thought I had a pretty decent application. I’m not sure anymore how admissions basis their decisions, as I’ve seen people with lower stats than mine accepted, and people with higher stats rejected. But congratulations to all who were accepted and good luck to all still waiting!

Hopefully this gives some kids who have lower numbers a little hope. My son is a freshman this year. He was accepted into Smeal with a 3.5 weighted GPA and a 23 ACT. The conclusion I’ve come up with is that they look at alot more than just those two. He took a total of 7 AP classes as well as accelerated classes. He played football and baseball. He sent no essay and no teacher recommendation. The high school he attended was in the top 2.5% according to the last rankings. It was the rankings that rated the 19K public high schools. Also we"re from CA. Good luck to all of you out there. I remember last year constantly checking his status.

Accepted DUS

Stats:

SAT: 2050
GPA: 3.5 UW / 3.68 W
Rank: 63/227
Other stats: 5 APUSH, 4 PtLang

Subjective:

Essays: Good (talked about coaching youth hockey team)
Counselor Rec: none
Hook (if any): Uncle is a huge alumni donor maybe?

Location/Person:

State or Country: Pennsylvania
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

@KDMorris11, we knew she was borderline at best, her gpa was 3.4 and SAT was 1720,
(high school scale 92-up A, 83-91 B, etc), but both parents, grandparents, an uncle are alum, and a sister there now, dont know if that is important. Seems to me from the threads many people were not open to summer, so i know that helped. Summer is the best time at UP! Good luck, hope you get in and hear soon!

Anyone else having trouble accessing the my penn state site this morning?

@psugrad I can not access the portal this morning either

Give it some time. Happens frequently (since I am an early bird I’ve noticed). They must do maintenance on the site in the morning

Those of you that have been accepted, how long are you going to wait to accept your offer if you think you are going. In other words, am I positive I am going to go to Penn State, and should I accept the offer now or wait a few weeks

If you know you are going there for sure, I would accept and get the process started, especially for housing (which goes fast) along with FAFSA and other scholarship opportunities. Thats what we are doing. My son was accepted to and considering Indiana and Delaware, but his heart was set on PSU, so now that he is accepted, no point in waiting in my opinion.

Ryanbound , my D’s pic changed yesterday night to alternate campus and message changed to coming days.

Any idea she can still get summer start at UP ?

ACT - 28
GPA - 3.4 UW
3 APs, many honors
Top 30% in class

As far as housing is concerned, even accepting now he’ll most likely be put into East Halls so I don’t feel there’s a big rush to have my son accept asap. Those who got accepted in the fall will be the ones who get their first choice. I think he’ll end up at PSU, and I’m thrilled, but I do want him to at least consider another school he’s been accepted to.

When does summer session begin?
