PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

Kudos back to you too!!! Two siblings applied for engineering. No brag, but above average. They should get in. We are not sweating it at all. Other options available. So enjoy the holiday everyone and keep on rolling!!!

So I just changed my major on my application from business to DUS summer. 4.0 w gpa/3.7 hw,1920 sat 600m 670 cr, 4aps and all honors, nhs and other ecs. When should I expect to hear back? My status changed to application has been updated 2 days ago but doesn’t say under review.

I guess we will have a few days off from checking the portal with the Thanksgiving holiday. Will be back checking next Monday.

Is it true that if you live and go to school in State College ditstrict, you will easily get into the Penn State.

  • I'm an international student and live in State College and go to the school which is located in state college district.

@john2873: you need to have the stats… it helps, because they know the school’s very good and that you’re likely to attend if admitted, but if you don’t have a 3.3 and decent SAT/ACT scores, nope.

@sworrell11 I heard back a week after I changed to DUS. best of luck!!

Did your app take some time to go from “updated” back to “under review”?

@MYOS1634 I have gpa:3.3 , SAT: 1750 (Reading:470,Math670,Writing:610) and SAT 2 MATH Lv2: 710

@juliacollege if you don’t mind me asking, what was your reason/drive to switch to DUS and what were you switching from? I applied to Smeal and I’m also considering switching so I’m just curious about the whole process on how to do it and why.

@sworrell11 yes it did take some time to change back to under review.
@Nrnjersey124 I originally applied to the college of engineering. Once I received my ACT scores from the October date and got a 29 composite with reading and English scores higher than math and science scores (doesn’t make sense because I am MUCH better at math and science) , I figured it didn’t make sense to apply engineering and I would probably have a much better chance getting in undecided … and because engineering at PSU is very competitive. Penn State is my dream school and I was willing to do anything to better my chances of getting in so I called admissions and they told me to
email them with my name, date of birth, PSU ID, and what I wanted to change on my application. Then a week later I got in. So changing to DUS was very beneficial for me. Best of luck to you:)

Can I ask what your sats and gpa were?(: :smiley:

DUS isn’t much different from going into a specific major is it? Almost same curriculum, engineering duh. I think going DUS gives you more exposure into the various fields that are available, correct me I I’m wrong

@Fisherprice111
SAT : 1850 superscore (R: 570, M:650 W: 630) 1810 one sitting (R: 570, M: 630, W: 610)
ACT: 29 composite ( E: 30, R: 31, M: 27, S: 27)
GPA: 4.0 UW

@skyblade1234,
Penn State doesn’t have direct admissions majors except for a very few (architecture, nursing, golf management , music.) If you mean admissions to a specific college, such as engineering, there is no difference in being admitted to the college versus DUS in terms of which classes you will be able to take to complete your requirements and eventually declare your major. And yes, in DUS you will also have the opportunity to take classes in other colleges, which is helpful in case you decide that engineering is not for you.

@skyblade1234 What was said above, plus DUS is less competitive to get into. So some students who might consider themselves on the bubble would be better suited to apply DUS as it ups their chances of getting in and they are able to take the exact same classes as if they’d applied to the school of engineering or Smeal, etc…The only way DUS doesn’t work for someone is if it’s a direct entry major (architecture, nursing, audition related majors like theater and music, etc…)

I applied to Smeal on Sept 1st with a 30 ACT and a 3.89 GPA and haven’t heard back yet. Does anyone have any insight for me if it would be smart to just wait it out or if I should just switch to DUS? Of course I would prefer Smeal, but if it is out of reach I would switch. Thanks in advance for the help

How are people sending in teacher recs? I know Schreyers has that page where you invite teachers via email but the normal penn state page doesn’t ask for recs does it?

@kcarpenterfan You cannot send in teacher recs unless it is for Schreyers.

@sambloomberg okay thanks! I think I was confused because someone wrote in their stats “teacher rec - good” and I assumed it was for the normal psu app - does that mean that Schreyers decisions are out too??
(can you tell I haven’t sent anything in yet haha)

Does anyone know if PSU wants visual arts supplements for non art students? For other schools it adds a valuable other layer to your app (esp if you’re NOT applying for art)
