PSU Class of 2021 Decision Thread

@allison1225 Last year they over-admitted way too many students, so my best guess is that they are waiting a little longer to accept anyone to see what our class’ applicant pool is like. They will definitely start accepting this month.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but if you are able to login to psu departments with your id if you are not yet admitted?

@class0f2017 I have a 3.82 unweighted and and 27 ACT. All my materials were in around September 10th. I applied to Pitt (My parents made me) a whole month after PSU, and I just heard last week that I got into Pitt. I have wanted to go to PSU ever since I was like 10 years old, so this wait is really stressing me out haha. I feel like my GPA is 75% but my test scores are kinda middle so I have no idea when I will hear back. And I applied undecided with Summer Session available.

@mdb2251 Pitt is a true rolling admissions school, so it’s common to hear back within a couple of weeks. If you were able to convey your love for Penn State in your personal statements, you’ll most likely get in. Summer Session will also greatly increase your chances. You’ll hear back, at the latest, January 30th.

Has anyone heard back for main campus??

@class0f2017 They have not released decisions for University Park yet.

@class0f2017 @allison1225 Tbh, I wouldn’t expect any decisions to start coming out for UP until late November or early December; especially if what I’ve heard about them taking in too many freshmen last year is true. The downside is that if they really did take too many students last year, the standards to get accepted to UP this year may be a little bit higher.

If you search on Twitter " class of 2021 penn state" some heard on Halloween

@NASA2014 Seriously doubt it. They were most likely branch campuses which have been releasing admissions for a few weeks now

@hasannadeem47 I was told by a PSU rep that they weren’t going to make it too much more competitive for fall admissions, but the over enrollment will make the spring admissions a lot harder.

@NASA2014 those were branch campuses.

According to an article posted TODAY on the PSU admissions site, they won’t even begin reviewing until after Nov 30.

@hasannadeem47 They aren’t making admissions tougher, per say. They are waiting longer to ensure that they accept the right people. The issue with last year is that they accepted people who were too far from “average”, which I estimate to be ~28 ACT, ~1300 SAT, 3.6 GPA. If you’re around those numbers, you’re fine. If you’re above those numbers, you’re fine. Last year, the issue would be something like them admitting a 24 ACT with a 2.9 GPA… too far from average. The good news is that Penn State is currently renovating many dorms so Fall 2017 will have a lot more housing, so they can afford more students that usual. It won’t be too long until we find out though!

@allison1225 I think you are mischaracterizing what happened last year. They didn’t accept too many unqualified applicants. They accepted too many qualified applicants. Due to the switching from eLion to LionPath, the program accidentally miscounted the number of accepted applicants. It had nothing to do with WHO they let in. Just how many. As far as waiting longer, that is also not true. Last year they didn’t start reviewing applications until late November and it will be the same this year and it was the same two years ago. There will be a few that show up before then but in general, they don’t start reviewing until the full “pool” of applicants is in - which means at the November 30 deadline. Some will hear earlier but it’s unlikely. If you go back and review the previous years acceptance threads, you will see a very vast array of acceptances and denials. Sometimes people with the exact same stats get different results because you can’t compare GPA’s across different school districts. You aren’t necessarily ‘fine’ with a 3.6 GPA. In fact, I’ve seen people with 4.0’s denied depending on how their school weighted their applications and what major they applied to. Take a look at the previous years acceptance threads…You will see anomalies on both sides of the acceptance spectrum. PSU notifies people at random. You may hear after someone who applied long after you. It’s just the way it is. But again, the over acceptance last year was the number of acceptances, not the quality of the applicants. Once the common data set is released, you will be able to see that information.

@jlhpsu If they took too many qualified applicants last year then naturally they would be accepting less qualified applications this year right? Which essentially means it is harder to get accepted this year than it was last year

@hasannadeem47 – More students than expected accepted admission to main campus last year. Whether you believe that the changeover to LionPATH increased the number of admission offers and ensuing acceptances or PSU’s popularity caused the number of paid acceptances is up to you. Either way, my guess is that this year’s class will be smaller than last year.

@hasannadeem47 Not necessarily, because housing is only guaranteed for the first year - so those accepted last year may have a harder time getting housing after freshman year - but the ‘slots available’ for freshmen will remain the same. Plus they are building new freshman dorms which will lead to more space. The issue with having too many applicants accepted last year was related to housing mostly. That is why they were offering people money to switch down to a 2+2.

There’s never been anywhere near enough housing at UP. They could build 15 new dorms and still not have enough, and they are not all strictly reserved for freshmen. There’s not enough housing, period, in town, so any uptick in units isn’t going to effect admissions at all.

Accepted to Smeal!

@TengoYankee What were your stats?

Accepted to Smeal too! =)
