PSU Class of 2021 Decision Thread

@Oneiota Ya seriously

Knowing that PSU does decisions in waves, seeing the latest PSU Admissions instagram post makes me think they are going to release decisions en masse at the end of January

@kearbear I was looking at UDel, Scranton, and Penn State, and I ultimately chose Penn State because of how strong and competitive the Nursing program is. Penn State alumni are everywhere and I think that is a huge advantage as well when it comes time to look for employment. Finally, I liked the concept of going to Hershey Medical Center for an entire year because you have the opportunity to do clinicals in a level 1 trauma center and a renowned pediatric hospital. Aside from academics no other school can compete with THON and football games!

@pennst2021 Well, two years ago when we were still waiting for my daughter’s decision, I tiled an entire bathroom just to keep from refreshing the portal! Believe me, I understand the frustration! My D waited almost 5 whole months. She found out on January 26, 2015 after applying Sept 2. It was a tough wait…but SO SO worth it. I wish Penn State did their admissions differently, but it must work for them somehow or else they wouldn’t keep doing it!
You will all see a flurry of activity the last two weeks of January. They release the majority of their decisions then.

Good luck everyone - just a couple more weeks at MAX!

You don’t register by major, you register by credit, the exception being Paterno Scholars and Schreyer Scholars.
You can register For the business freshman seminar as DUS or as Smeal, etc.
The only difference is that your personal adviser, is not in Smeal.
(if you’re in Schreyer you have a personal adviser anyway.)

The wait now is worse than ever just because it’s so close to being over

I spoke to an admissions rep. about the very issue you raised. The rep. told me not to switch out of Smeal and into DUS at this juncture. She said - “no news is good news” as they are going through an inordinate amount of applications and rejecting the ones for Smeal that are not overtly qualified. For example: she said if you are applying to Smeal without Calculus or have a lower level math on your transcript, you would be rejected outright. The next step for admissions is to go through all those that were not deemed unacceptable and giving those applications a thorough go over. She told me to hang in there, and even if I don’t get into Smeal out of the gate, I could change to DUS, Smeal Summer, or DUS summer if need be. Many options, hang in there!
Fred.

Does an incoming Freshmen who has 15+ AP credits get to register for classes before other Freshmen?

Freshman registration happens at NSO, and your NSO date doesn’t depend on credits, so not as far as I know. ^

NSO depends on things like when you enrolled and completed ALEKS, I believe.

@Trollair For your first semester you register at NSO with your advisor. But, for your second semester, yes, you will be able to register before the other freshman depending on how many credits you have. http://www.registrar.psu.edu/Reg_Timetable/spring17.cfm

I’ve heard once it get to January Penn State usually holds most decisions until nearly the end of the month. Is this true?

@CathJR sure seems like it. Supposedly the majority of decisions come out in the last two weeks on January.

@CathJR I talked to admissions a few weeks ago and from what the woman told me it seems like they release a wave at some point next week and then the rest around the last 2 weeks of Jan.

Should I be worried if my portal hasn’t updated? I recently sent my transcript on December 21

@NASA2014 , no don’t worry. Clearly there is absolutely no method to this madness. Sometimes I wonder why people even apply.

Just three more longggg weeks. The wait is long and stressful but we’re almost there.

I have 3.0 uw and 3.5w but an upward trend and an excellent personal statement along with ec’s plus I’m first generation. Is applying to DUS at UP easier even though I’m sure of what I want to do? I want to major in psychology and that’s the college of liberal arts? I don’t want to go in undeclared and I’m not sure what to do? (I know I should be posting this itself but I’d rather post here where there are actual students who are applied.)
