Son was accepted 1/12 to UP Eberly College of Science for Physics from out of state. 1430 SAT, Unweighted GPA 3.7. 9 Honors, 5 APs, 2 season athlete, Clubs. Penn State is is #2 choice, so he is very happy. It may become #1 choice once all acceptances are in and he has time to think about his final decision.
Interesting, you have no other children at PSU? I just received the email, but I thought maybe its related to my daughter who is a Junior at PSU.
but just read the email and it saids Welcome to the Penn State Family! Taking it as a good sign, for my son who is still waiting.
My daughter deposited at PSU 3 years ago but changed her mind and went elsewhere. I do on occasion get a random email from PSU but this said welcome etc
I’m not home to check the portal. Wonder if this means acceptance!
@doberlady I don’t want to dampen your excitement, but the letter likely doesn’t indicate acceptance at UP one way or the other. If your child applied at UP and had a back up campus listed, even if they are denied they are almost always offered a spot at a branch campus - which is still Penn State. So, even though it could very well be that your child will get in, a letter from the parents organization won’t indicate that. Fingers crossed for you!
I didn’t get a letter. Why would some get a letter and not another? I am very confident I will get accepted based on my grades, ACT, EC, relationship with the school and essays. This is kind of a safety school for me but it’s odd how they handle communications. Just very different from other schools.
Does everyone receive a packet in the mail after there acceptance on the portal, and if so how long did you wait for it after your acceptance on the portal?
@swimming123 I wouldn’t consider Penn State a safety with your scores for Smeal. Hopefully you will get in, but Smeal only accepted 11% of it’s applicants last year. You’d likely get in if you applied undecided, but a 3.6 and a 29ACT is not ‘safety’ at PSU. My daughter got in DUS but had to go in the summer and had a 3.5 and 29ACT. If you get denied you can call and ask to be reconsidered undecided.
Also, the email people are talking about was sent to the parents. Not the students. First your portal will change, then you will get the packet. Some people get an e mail, others don’t. I think that depends on the major.
@jlhpsu - thanks for the info. I think you might be right regarding the major and how they communicate. The reason I say it’s “kind” of a safety is because I have a close relationship with the school and my high school is very, very competitive. My GPA and ACT on Naviance puts me in an area where no one was denied to PSU in 6 years. That includes all majors. I’ll have to ask my parents if they received an email. I’ve already been accepted to many schools that have more difficult admissions standards, but you never know. I think my sister would like to attend PSU in two years, so this information is all helpful for her too. Now she will know the process.
@swimming123 Be careful of Naviance as I think the chart you’re looking at is for all campuses at PSU. As I’m sure you realize the branch campuses are less stringent than University Park.
So I waited so long for the portal to be updated and was accepted for summer last week after 4 months. So I called Admissions and asked for a reevaluation for fall admission and I’m back in the waiting game for fall. They even updated the portal back to application being reviewed. I have summer acceptance so that still stands if not accepted for fall. Anyway I’m back waiting but much less anxiety this time…
@fall_november888 I got my decision in November but I still havent received my admission packet. I am an international applicant. Have any other international applicants received their acceptance packets??
Wondering if they are just behind in the process? PSU recently offered an early retirement package and they may be unexpectedly understaffed. Hoping that there are still a lot of acceptances to be handed out.
