Even if your borderline they will just deny you without any offer?
@blong1412 that is what I thought too! Either they’re waiting for tonight or tomorrow night. Or they’re reallyyyyy pushing this off. They even tweeted last week saying that decisions will be made this week!
Yes, because you told them you wanted only X major and only X campus. If you get denied, you can call and ask to be reconsidered for DUS, summer, or another campus, but there’s no guarantees about getting in then either.
So I guess its University Park or nothing? Or… can they offer you the 2+2?
weird because i heard some people getting asked to do the 2+2 last year for a reduced tuition
@doy123 You would just get denied because you did not specifically state that you wanted to do summer and you did not pick a commonwealth campus as your second choice. If this happens, you can call them and asked to be reevaluated for summer or a commonwealth campus. If you then get offered a commonwealth campus, it would be for the 2+2.
What do you think my chances are if my GPA 3.77 and SAT (new) 1120. Is my SAT to low to get into University
Park? No AP just Honor Classes.
@chuckiem probably because penn state got their yield wrong and too many kids enrolled
@CathJR accurate
Does anyone know when Provost awards go out?
Just 12 more long days but man I really hope they release some tonight. I’ve heard of very few acceptances since break. Makes me feel like they’re not working very hard at getting all of them done.
Are you privy to the actual number of acceptances since break?
If so, please share. If not…how do you know how hard they’re working? lol.
The wait is stressful, but it’s almost over. Relax.
My guess is that they are being very careful this year about how many acceptances there are because of the debacle last year. I think maybe holding off to see how many accept from the early acceptances in the fall before making a final decision on borderline people.
The students who have not heard back are not all “borderline” students. Many are highly qualified. Penn State has until The end of January for those who applied by November 30th. Last I checked, it is not the end of January yet.
Does anyone think I have a chance at getting in to University Park with a 3.77 GPA and a 1120 (new) SAT?
No AP’s a few Honors classes.
Frustration here is warranted. While I don’t believe the process is unfair, it is illogical. Some suggestions for modifying the process would be an Early Decision application and add a box to be considered for DUS if not admitted to major of first choice.
There are too many that just apply to apply and others that apply simply as a safety. This reduces opportunities for kids that really want to be there. ED would solve that to some extent.
Every school day for the last four months I wait for my daughter’s text at 9am telling me nothing has changed. My heart breaks for her. This is where she wants to be. She has loved it there from her first football game in the snow as a little girl and it has only been reinforced in subsequent visits. I tell her all the time, she will get in. She attends a top rated PA public school. Her numbers are all right in the middle for accepted UP students last year and well above commonwealth campuses. What I don’t know is how they break down for her specific interest (not Smeal). She could have applied DUS but didn’t think it was necessary. She refused to apply to any other schools until it became necessary on 12/31/2016 because she did not receive a response.
I would gladly have donated the $500 in application fees to other schools to Penn State for the earlier response. As an alumnus of Penn State I receive calls all the time for donations and received an invitation last year to an event with Dr. Barron that came from their “donation” department. I now tell those callers, I have donated every year since I graduated, but I am waiting to see if my daughter is accepted. I will be beyond furious if she is not accepted.
On the other hand, my son, after changing from Smeal to DUS, was re-evaluated and accepted to UP. He has deferred the last two years. To him it is a safety school. His process is what makes it illogical. It is only a safety, he wasn’t accepted to UP for Smeal, yet he was able to send an email to be re-evaluated for DUS and just like that he’s in. He waited half the time as my daughter for his decisions. His GPA was lower and SAT higher.
This doesn’t have to be as frustrating and illogical as it has become. The admissions department has done this for years. They know the metrics. Their application is as easy as it gets. Add the ED application and automatic review for DUS and it gets even easier.
For the record, I went summer session out of high school. One of the best times of my life. Classes are a little easier and if your in a major like engineering or science, it gets you on the off-semester for weed out classes like calculus, chemistry and physics. You get to meet some classmates and friends before the majority gets there. Still have some of those great friendships and memories for a lifetime.
Good luck to all those frustrated and waiting.
For The Glory!!!
My understanding is that you would be deferred to a branch campus. They would not consider you for summer since you didnt check it but its not like you wouldnt be accepted at one of the branch campuses. If someone disagrees with this, please let me know. I"m going by some that I know that werent accepted at UP but were sent to a branch
@nitlyn GREAT POST! I’ve thought about how PSU could improve their admissions process too. And what I’ve decided is if you apply by November 30, you find out on January 31st- everyone: not a soul before that. That’s the way other reputable schools do it. This alleviates the wonder of why some get accepted before others even though they applied later etc. This system that such a highly regarded research university has is incredibly flawed. And yet applications continue to rise. Go figure. Maybe if everyone boycotted PSU then they would change their illogical, nonsensical admission ways.
Hi everyone! I’m new to this whole thing but for the past few weeks I’ve been anticipating my admission decision from Penn State, and have been checking this thread for any additional details. Like everyone was saying, I thought that this week was going to be a big decision week, but I saw that nobody had heard back. A few days ago, my portal status changed, but then a few hours later that day it changed back to normal. I didn’t think I would hear back until the 31st, but I am so happy to say that I just checked my portal right after midnight and saw that I have been accepted! Just for reference from some previos posts that the picture on my portal of University Park never changed. Hope this helps!
Finally accepted!! I guess all that complaining I did today hurried them lol. Accepted to Smeal college of business for fall. Got in with a 4.1 W gpa and a 30 act.
