PSU Class of 2022 Decision Thread

Thanks @lastone, I think we are going to add VT to the list. I also looked at South Carolina but the deadline was 12/1.

@Cookies510 Good! VT is a great school. You’ll have to wait until April to hear but we’ll get a good idea about who got in when they release the ED decisions this week. Honestly, with regard to SC, they are looking for high stats kids. I wouldn’t write them off without a call. They may let you apply late if you give them some indication that your son might attend. They give great merit money. Might be worth a shot. They can only say no

ACCEPTED!! College of Health and Human Development with Human Development and Family Studies as my major. (hopefully with pre-med focus!)

Applied around 12/1/2017 I think

Good luck to everyone!!

Schreyer decisions come out around February/March.

@Cookies510 I did hear that DUS is much more competitive this year. I think everyone who wants to major in Engineering or Business caught on and is applying DUS. I actually know about 10 high school seniors who all applied that way. Is it possible, if your son is not going for either of those majors, that he can be reevaluated for a less competitive major? His stats seem good for UP. That said, I hear a lot of good things about Altoona. I know quite a few students who are there now, who really didn’t want to be, and are loving it.

@japsmom the admissions counselor I spoke with indicated this might be case. If I only had an idea what majors these were and then he could decide if it includes anything he’s interested in. But he is a strong math kid (770 SAT M) & his interests lean towards more analytical majors that would seem to be more competitive.

I have also heard good things about Altoona but he’s not feeling it. But it’s only been a few days so maybe he’ll feel differently after some tjme passes. I’m hoping to put him in touch with some kids who are there.

Since undecided is really competitive this year do you think changing to a less competitive major like education would help someone’s chances with getting accepted?

My son was accepted to the University Park campus for the College of Engineering yesterday. He applied in early September.
Stats:
GPA: 97/100
ACT: 28
OOS
He will graduate high school this year with close to 40 college credits. He has taken AP classes and honors when offered.

Still waiting for daughter 3.7, 27, 1220 a bit disappointed to see Out of state kids getting in with scores lower then in state being sent to a branch. PSU is her first choice, but she has other choices and if she gets a branch she will go elsewhere. Based solely on what I see here,I understand why a few in state parents are frustrated.

@Cookies510, Maybe try the following majors?
College of Liberal Arts - Economics or Social Data Analytics
Intercollege - Data Science
Eberly - Statistics or Physics
College of IST - Security and Risk Assessment

Just have him reconsidered for a more specific major. Just a thought.

Google “Major Quest Penn State” and a tool will show up that helps students pick through different degrees based on their interests.

@tucklentz, agreed. Although the rest of his application was strong IMO, his SAT was a low 1250 for engineering at university park. I was surprised he was quickly accepted.

It would be a shame if instate students were denied a more affordable option. I fear my son will be in a similar position when the Virginia Tech (in state) decisions are announced and we will be forced to pay for a quality OOS program instead.

Note that going to a branch campus for two years would save even more money than going to UP for all four.

@apnova My son may have the opposite problem with regard to PSU and VT. Strong ACT but GPA is on the lower side because of a weaker freshman year. He has 13 AP/Honors classes, leadership, sports, community service etc., but if someone gets hung up on the GPA (without looking at the trajectory or his ACT) then he may be on the outside looking in.

I was I was not referring to anyone in particular. Just a general observation. And to be fair it difficult to make real analysis with what is on this page. Good luck to all.

I am getting a little nervous now after reading all todays posts. My D has 3.6 W and 1300 SAT 18 plus Honors and Top rated rigorous PA school .I was assuming she will get into DUS or summer session till now.

Trying to delete this post. Can’t figure out how. Will an admin delete please.

@Cookies510 he will likely get in if you call to be reevaluated for an agriculture major. I heard the same thing about DUS. He of course would not have to do the agriculture major as u don’t even declare your major until your third year. Let me know how it goes!

@cookies510 I amstunned that he did not get in for summer DUS…what did admissions tell you? That is just crazy…

@krabbiek they were vague & said the cutoffs for DUS were higher this year. Told me my son could call & ask to be re-evaluated under a different major but that cut-offs for other majors are still a work in progress.
