PSU Class of 2022 Decision Thread

Im ranked 68 to give you an idea

Some of my peers have been accepted in to smeal with 3.6wgpa and 1260 sat. I just feel like based on that I should have been accepted

@Collegekid22 I wonder if there is more selection criteria for the individual Smeal college. With your stats- you are WELL over the averages for Penn State.

^ With those stats, they got into Smeal 2+2 and neglected to mention it. …

@collegekidd22 @thebigD1001
How many honors+APs do you have if you add them all? What APs?

Any Dance majors on this thread? Did anyone pass the pre-screen?

10 ap classes including calc, lit, Lang, bio, psych, world, gov, physics, stat and environmtal science

I’m asking for reconsideration and I’m going to apply under a different major

I primarily took/take Accelerated courses. 6 AP classes include:Microeconomics, English 11, World History, Physics, Calculus, Psychology. I have alumni which include my brother and father. My rank is 68/318

I never took academic or general courses. For my school it goes AP, Accel, Academic, and General.

@collegekidd22 I think in your case that might be wise to ask for the reconsideration. I’m not sure how/where you go into the cue, but I think you would fare well with DUS. My son had similar stats to you and was accepted to main campus, DUS for the fall. Also, I’ve seen several with lower stats that also got in to DUS in the Fall. Smeal is very competitive.

Question - how would you rank your high school in terms of difficulty? If you are in PA, where would it fall on this list?

Top 10%, 25%, 50% etc.?

I live in Maryland and my high school is one of the most competitive public schools in the state. I rank in the top 20% of my class

Id say its competitive. I go to North Pocono so if you wanted to look it up you can.

@collegekidd22 Ok, what about on this list?

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/search?state-urlname=maryland

yes, my high school is in the top 10 on that list.

Thank you for the advice!

@collegekidd22 Interesting. Then, IMO, the reason you got to altoona was likely because you applied to Smeal and not just DUS. Stats are probably light for Smeal but not overall. Good luck.

My school is top 12% in PA

@thebigD1001 , Penn State receives 70K applications statewide. The majority of applicants hope to attend UP, but last year, only 7700 students ended up starting at UP. Someone may have gotten in because they applied to an easier college as a premajor or DUS for summer. Or maybe they were on the bubble and had an exceptional backstory or were a recruited athlete. You can’t know that. Your weighted GPA sits on the lower half of the GPA midrange for UP. Your SAT scores are below the 25th percentile. I applaud you for taking all higher level courses, but you didn’t excel in those higher level course to what is required for UP. With your unweighted GPA being so low, it suggests you probably had a C or two. IMO, you fit the profile for a perfect 2+2 candidate. Go to a branch campus, get beyond those painful weed out courses, and then come to UP. I know your frustrated because you didn’t get what you wanted. Welcome to adulthood. It’s time to bounce back and show some resiliency and grit. Life’s not fair, so make the best with what you’ve been given.

Do you know how long it will take to see it on the portal when it says,“Your application has been updated. Please check back soon for a status update.”

@PAHoosier does a school’s rank come into play at most colleges? Just curious. I didn’t realize that colleges looked at a schools ranking when evaluating an application. My son is still waiting on a decision for PSU. His school is the #1 public high school in PA never thought that meant all that much outside of having a good reputation in Philadelphia.
