@lunalou would you mind sharing your daughters stats for those still waiting to hear from dus?
@kastiaroad maybe they should have posted a bulletin on their website stating that would have definitely alleviated everyone’s stress. Thank you for posting what they told you.
@ccs0623 I wonder if perhaps that decision was just communicated when I called? I agree though, if you’re going to post a hard date for decisions, there should be an update.
I heard that admissions is very backed up so they are pushing the date until feb 7.
Just called Admissions to check on D Nursing Application - was advised that yes she is indeed a priority applicant - for a 1/31/18 response. That did not happen along with many others still waiting. I was advised they are behind on the Nursing applicants specifically and will be continuing to release decisions through next Wed 2/7 to keep checking the portal. If portal is not updated with a decision by then to call them back. Sounds like they are now at least giving the same “new” date of next Wednesday 2/7. Good luck to all still waiting!
ugh. what a bummer for all the nursing applicants. The only good news is that it isn’t a ‘deny’ … I would guess you are still in the ballpark and they are figuring out where the line is. At this point, you’ve waited this long, find something to keep busy ?
good luck.
lunalu, did the portal change to DUS this morning?
I got in late last night (technically morning) at around 1am. Electrical engineering, 1500 SAT (800m, 700r), 4.0 UW, many stem ecs/leadership roles. Applied 11/30.
@notasnowflake It doesn’t matter if you are admitted into Smeal (pre-major) or DUS as far as what classes you can take or even ending up in the business school.
If you are admitted as a freshman into Smeal, then you need to:
- take the ENTM (entrance to major classes)
- maintain a 3.2 gpa (3.5 for Finance)
- apply at the end of your sophomore year.
If you are a DUS student. then you need to:
- take the ENTM (entrance to major classes)
- maintain a 3.2 gpa (3.5 for Finance)
- apply at the end of your sophomore year.
The advantages to being directly admitted into Smeal? You get a business advisor (vs. a DUS advisor). You are eligible for Sapphire Leadership program. Other than that, the process is the same.
If you don’t feel you can cut it starting from DUS, then you probably can’t cut it in Smeal either, since the process is the same.
@kastiaroad I can’t imagine your daughter doesn’t have very good chances of getting into UPark with those stats. It just looks like her application may be in the big mix of everyone that submitted close to the 11/30 cutoff date. It seems you never know how they decide, but your stats are more than average, don’t give up and go to Pitt just yet!
Just got off the phone with admissions, they said I was a priority applicant and that if I don’t hear by next week then I should call again
Just checked on my portal and noticed my second choice campus disappeared. Does this mean anything? Very anxious and still waiting for a decision. Also for anyone that is wondering, I called yesterday and was told another wave of decisions is coming out today and tomorrow. I was told to check tomorrow.
@onthesearch814 thanks for the encouragement. Pitt has always been top in her heart, and as a science major would afford her some really great research opportunities. I just felt it was important to atleast consider what UP had to offer before making a decision. The problem is, she heard from Pitt weeks ago, is being invited to Honors Day, etc, while we still wait to hear from Penn State…oh well.
does anyone know how hard it would be to ask to change colleges after being admitted? My son was admitted Fall and is rethinking his major and wanted to do it before scheduling classes if possible.
Depends on th major and if it’s in the same college. But it’d be simpler for him to stay put and change during orientation, when scheduling classes. "Ooh, finally I don’t want to major in global studies, I think I’ll major in SODA’.
@psu94 @MYOS1634 It was very easy for my son. He is a now freshman at UP and was admitted for IST and switched to engineering at orientation. In fact, they had a designated time for kids that wanted to change majors. They were very understanding. However, there were some pre-majors such as business and nursing I believe that you had to be accepted to and couldn’t simply opt into.
there was great angst about the orientation policies of allowing changes in past years, so I would not bet the farm that in such a competitive year it will be a simple thing this time around. . But changing a major within a college is very different than changing colleges.
@greenbutton I think that is wise advice. We went into the admissions office at accepted students day for IST and was told that it would be possible to make the major change to engineering. Got contact info from admissions counselor and confirmed via email before committing to PSU. My son walked away from scholarships to West Virgina and Temple so it was no easy choice.
My D got accepted to Fall 2018 UP today. She was accepted into Eberly for Pre-Medicine.
At literally the final hour last night, my Daughter with 1,470/33, 4.2w Full IB Diploma and lots of EC’s got offered 2+2 instead of Smeal at UP. Took about 10 seconds to determine that the offered arrangement was not at all for her.
She will be fine and has she much better options already available to her. I feel it’s just a shame that PSU puts so much importance on placing legacy students at University Park instead of encouraging new perspectives.
