So my quirky child has been accepted to all three of these schools and we are confused. Penn State Schreyer has a fantastic deal, the school gave quite a bit of merit aid so the total cost will come in at only 1/3 the price of Reed or Carleton. All these options seem to have good grad school outcomes. Is Reed or Carleton going to be life changing in some way I am missing over Schreyer. By the brochures it seems so but I am so practical and so I can't imaging spending the extra money. Child is an unusual kid and will not take advantage of the frats or sports that PSU offers so I do worry will be a misfit at PSU and happiness is worth something to me, I just don't know how much. Is there a Schreyer grad who can comment on the likelihood a different sort of kid could find not only opportunities but a special place within Schreyer and PSU and look back on the four years there fondly and without regret.

My son is currently a freshman in Schreyer Honors College and absolutely loves it. I am not sure what you mean by “unusual” when you describe your child, but mine was a very quiet student in high school and not into athletics. In fact, I never pictured him at a large school … but he is thriving at SHC. Academically, he is enjoying his classes and is being challenged. He has met with his academic advisor(s) multiple times already and absolutely feels like he is supported by them. He is already involved in research and will be doing a study abroad program this summer, which he is super excited for. He has a wonderful and diverse group of friends who support each other. Are you sure your child would not attend a PSU sporting event? My son and his Schreyer friends have gone to just about every football game and even some hockey and basketball too. They love going (amazing spirit in the student section!) Your child might surprise you! My son is extremely happy with his decision to attend - as am I!
