General Comments: I was not really shocked to get in. Sadly PSU is a nice school but it is not my number one school because it cares more about weeding out then teaching in its intro classes due to the large amount of students

^I rarely comment, however, how can you make that claim? Do you know of people who were “weeded” out? I am aware of many successful freshman students.

^I know a few and I heard the professors are really not helpful

I wouldn’t say say PSU “cares more about weeding out” students but there are certain freshman classes that tend to make students re-evaluate their majors. Math 140 and Chem 110 for example. My son said in his Chem 110 class this past semester the average on the final was 63 or 64. And there is no curve. He worked his tail off to get a good grade (paid for extra review sessions, went to the TA review sessions, took Chem 108). Many kids also drop or do poorly in Math 140. And the challenging entrance to major requirements for some majors, e.g. business and engineering, definitely cause some students to have to seek other majors. But I think that is why the students that graduate from these majors do so well after graduation - you have to be a strong student and work hard to earn those degrees.

I believe you will find these so called “weeder” classes at all but the very small schools. In a class of 200 students the professors don’t hold your hand. You are expected to do the work and whatever else you need to do to pass. There are just too many majors that require Chem and Calc to have small classes. My D took both this year and went to the professors office hours. They were more than willing to talk to her and give her guidance. But, she definitely struggled in Chem as did most of her freshmen friends.

I know for a fact that Virginia Tech and Univ. of Delaware have extremely large lecture classes for these courses. My D’s friends at other schools also talked about the size of their class. They all go to large/mid-size schools.

If you want small classes as a freshmen, you might want to look at small private schools.

@theojohn are you serious about the average ? If that’s the case then I might never be able to get into the major I am intrested after my sophmore year. 63 is wayyy too low for a university where students with 3.7 GPA in high school and 1800 SAT study. I hope thats not the case in sophmore year. What is your son saying ?

@Kvillemom - I agree with your last comments. Even at small LACs I think many kids go into a certain major and find after their 1st or 2nd semester that they don’t have the aptitude (or desire) to stay in that major. I was in that situation back in the 80’s. :)

@XtremePower - That was the average on the Chem 110 final - I’m not sure about the final grade distribution. But obviously many kids do well enough in these classes to continue along their chosen paths!

I applied to UP in early/mid October and still have not heard back, which could either be a good or a bad sign. My grades (weighted GPA 3.5) and test scores (ACT 27) are borderline and I’m wondering if I have a chance. Has anyone gotten in with similar scores? I applied undecided and said I would be willing to do summer session.

Does anyone know when the admission decisions will start rolling out again? I know they were on holiday break, but since it’s the New Year do the decisions start coming out again tomorrow? I’m really starting to get anxious and nervous.

Classes don’t start again until Monday – hang in there!
