Im looking for schools with strong psychology and dance programs. For the most part it seems when one is strong the other is somewhat lacking. I’ve been trained in dance my entire life so I don’t want to feel like I’m settling for a subpar program but I’d also like to have a great psychology program as that’s the career I want to go into. Any recommendations on schools that excel in both?
I have a fairly average GPA of 3.65 (4.05 weighted) which will hopefully go up with my senior year classes and I scored a 1570 on the SAT. (My study habits have definitely improved since freshman year). I’d like to not have to pay insane amounts of money for schooling but I am willing to look into and apply to expensive schools in hopes of merit scholarships. I’d also like to go to a more left leaning/liberal school. Im transgender and would prefer a school with a large LGBTQ+ community. Im having a hard time searching all of the specifics I’m looking for. Any recommendations?
I recommend searching CC for past posts on the topic, as dance programs (particularly ballet) have been discussed a fair amount. You may want to post this on the Dance majors forum as well.
Let’s see… private LAC’s and U’s that are strong in both could be:
Oberlin (Look into access to dance programs for non-majors - I’m not sure of that part - but great academically, dance-wise, and LGBTQ+ wise)
Fordham
NYU
Scripps (if you’re female-identifying… and if not, a psych major at Pitzer could freely cross-register for dance courses at Scripps, and there is a vibrant dance community across the consortium… and a substantial LGBTQ+ community)
U of Richmond (gives dance-specific scholarships for minors as well as for majors, as well as academic merit. Maybe not quite as liberal as you would prefer, but maybe fine https://commonground.richmond.edu/lgbtq-life/index.html )
Chapman (excellent dance program, and well-connected to psych internship opportunities in LA)
Vassar, Skidmore, Conn College, Bard, Sarah Lawrence…? (All “artsy” but I’m not familiar with dance program details)
Public:
Rutgers - strong in both and has both double-major and dance-minor options
SUNY Purchase - was the trans-friendly campus long before trans-friendly became a widespread expectation. Excellent in dance. Strong faculty mentoring within the psych department https://www.purchase.edu/academics/psychology/
